Can standing up a few hours in a row burn calories? (housebound for a few weeks)

Hi! Currently housebound due to medical reasons. Staying at home is driving me nuts and one of my concerns is gaining weight as I had to cut out jogging.
While I'm housebound I want to avoid staying the whole day seated/laying down. To keep busy, I'm doing DIY projects (mainly sowing) so I do this standing up in front of the dining table a whole afternoon.
Could this help burn calories? One of my concerns while I'm stuck at home is gaining weight.
Thanks !

Yes. Being more active burns more calories. It's probably only around 200 depending on how many hours you're waking around. It also depends on you're weight and fitness. You'll burn more calories walking if you're out of shape and overweight0

You burn calories just being alive. You need to consume @ what your body burns to stay at a stable weight. There can be fluctuations daily in your weight by several pounds either way, up or down. Standing up may burn a little more calories than sitting or lying down. What you want to do is not eat more calories than your body burns in order to not gain during this time of inactivity.0

I would think the calorie burn standing vs sitting would be minuscule, but it would be there none the less.
You say housebound for medical reasons, are there any physical limitations to that? If not the net is full of workouts you can do at home: intructions for bodyweight exercises, YouTube vids for various programs, etc. You also could walk in place in front of TV, pick up heavy stuff, whatever. The weight gain would primarily be due to diet, however, so if you keep that in check you should be OK.0 -
Please don't be upset clariemoo, but I believe you might have an eating disorder and if so should not be losing weight. There are a handful of "medical reasons" to be housebound, but all of them are usually keeping you at home to prevent activity or injury, or because you have an injury/immobility or need to let your body recover. If you are trying to find ways to stay active and "had to give up jogging" it sounds very much like ED behavior. If not disregard my post, I just worry when I see posts like this. However if it is true please please take care of yourself and get help from a doctor if you need it. Life is to precious and you are to important to hurt yourself and let that dangerous mindset control your life.0

I'd be worried as well, and if you can stand and sew, maybe you can float around a pool or something.
I always found a way to train - even from my hospital bed.0 -
Hi I've been housebound recently and on and off over the last 12 yrs due to cancer! When I was unable to get up and walk I would sit there and do leg exercises, arms and try and get some form of cardio going. I really didn't burn very much but it helped. When I recovered more after my major surgeries and I was able to walk a bit, I would do laps of my hallway, which is quite long. There are always ways to stay a bit active when your housebound. I had my last major operation 14 weeks ago and put on 7 kilos. I started back at the gym 4 weeks ago but taking thing's slowly while my body is still healing. Can I ask why your housebound? Might help to know a bit about what your able to do.0

What about just walking? or walking up and down stairs?0

Just had a look at your profile and you don't look overweight at all? You say you've lost 10 kilos with another 8 to go? Warning signs straight up? Please be honest about your medical reasons and being housebound. Thanks.0

Looking at OP'S profile I tend to agree!!0 -
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see anything in the profile to indicate an eating disorder.
OP just make sure to clear any exercise with your MD.0 -
Exercise is more for fitness, including walking. You may need to restrict your calories a bit further than you normally would with your jogging, but if your doctor wants you at home, he or she probably has a good reason for wanting to keep you resting. In fact, you should probably discuss eating in a deficit with your doctor. When your body is healing from something, either illness or injury, it needs fuel to heal properly. If you eat at maintenance for a few weeks, you won't gain any weight but you will give your body the fuel it needs to heal you properly so that when you're no longer housebound, you can jump back on the weight loss and fitness horse healthy and ready to go. Please speak with your doctor about this because we don't know your medical situation, nor are we doctors.0

Weight loss is calories. Eating less than you burn will = weight loss.So set your MFP to sedentary and eat what it tells you. It would help to know the reason you are housebound, because we might be able to recommend at home stuff.0
