How do I avoid eating so much sugar? It's not enough to count calories, because even eating under 1000 calories today, I consumed over 24 grams of sugar! I didn't eat anything very sugary either... an egg, cereal and soy, celery and tomatoes, and a ham/cheese hot pocket. I need to eat at least 1200 calories every day, but it's hard to do that when the grams of sugar add up so fast =/ I don't know how to meet the calcium and Vitamin amount every day because milk, fruits and veggies contain large amounts of sugar too. Any suggestions?

It's crazy when you start looking at the ingredients of processed foods. Check your cereal, soy milk and that hot pocket. Natural sugar found in unprocessed foods adds up fast enough... no reason to add to it with the processed crap. That being said, it's easier to keep away from sugar in theory. Keep working on it though 0 0

I wouldn't worry so much about the number of grams of sugar but pay attention to the type. Lactose and fructose are healthy, natural sugars that are absorbed more slowly because of the protein in dairy products and the fiber in fruits. Processed sugar and corn syrups are the ones to be concerned with.0

get rid of the processed food, and the extra sodium, sugar, soy/corn fillers, and other junk will disappear.
Stick to whole foods, like veggies, fruit, whole grains and you can't go wrong. (PS I don't worry about whole fruit sugars, as long as they aren't in juice form)0

We are talking about this in my nutrition class. Americans on a 1200 kcal diet are only supposed to have 5 tsp of sugar a day! It is impossible. I would definitely steer clear of processed foods, such as a hot pocket, and try instead eating a sandwich on 100% whole GRAIN bread, turkey and mustard. the fiber in the whole grain will fill you up and the turkey is low in fat, mustard is zero kcal. Or if you like tuna that has good omega-3 fats that the body needs. Cereal is also LOADED with sugar! Even raisin bran can have as much as 20g!!!! Try either eggs, or plain oatmeal. Even if you make the plain oatmeal and add 1 tsp of brown sugar will only have about 5 grams in it (15 kcal). Also, depending on how much you eat for breakfast, fruit is a good source of sugar.0

This. I buy unsweetened almond milk for that same reason. I don't need the added sugar. I beat that hot pocket also had a bunch of sodium in addition to the sugar. It's hard enough to control natural sugar, but eating processed foods make it even harder. It's crazy when you start looking at the ingredients of processed foods. Today I went over by 7g just for breakfast! Rice krispies with soy (because I'm out of special K), and 4 tbs of non-fat creamer with my coffee. It's very easy for me to avoid going over on sodium, cholesterol, etc. But I've decided to ignore the sugar counter for now because there's no way I can give up my fruits and milk. Thanks for all the great suggestions, guys!0

I agree to this. Concern yourself with the source, not sugar in general. And, if you feel it hitting your bloodstream too quickly, be sure to eat things with sugar with some protein (ie. fruit and cheese). It will take a little longer to digest that way.0
