Looking for swimmers!

Hi everyone,
This is my first time on the site. I started swimming leisurely a few weeks ago, and then made it into a 4-5 times a week activity. I'm not otherwise active...and have a desk job.
I need to take classes to perfect my freestyle technique, as I currently can't breathe when I do... so I've been alternating (mostly) breaststroke and backstroke for 30-45 minutes a day. I've already started noticing that I'm more toned than before, but the scale is not moving... so I signed up for myfitnesspal three days ago, hoping calorie counting will help keep me accountable for what goes in!
Outside of the app, I'd also started cutting down on alcohol consumption -- previously a glass of wine or beer a night, most nights, and now limited to Fridays, Saturdays, and celebrations (not common. I'm not going to start making excuses to celebrate, dont' worry!).
I know I'll eventually need to add other types of exercise into my routine, but I want to make sure I have swimming down as a regular thing first.
[About me: 5'4"/1m66 female, currently at 150lbs/68kg -- definitely never seen the scale so high -- and goal is 130lbs.]
Looking forward to meeting you!

I've recently started swimming again as well. I swam competitively as a child (as competitive as one can be when they're like 7) but just started swimming for exercise about a month ago. I was motivated to get back in the pool as cross training for running (I started FIRST running training to improve my 5k time, but had to stop due to life getting in the way. I'm scheduled to start up again next week to train for a race on Oct 31).
If you have easy access to a kick board, you can try using that to at least practice the freestyle kicking and pulling your face out of the water to breathe, until you have a chance to get lessons. I've been contemplating finding some swimming drills. Right now I just do 4 lengths each of kickboard, freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke, 4-5x.
Good luck and welcome!0 -
We have a very active very supportive swimming forum here on mfp. Experience ranges from people just getting into the water this week, to former olympic swimmers. Come on over,

Alternate between intensity and volume days. Intensity-M/W/F 20 min of non stop sprints (side stroke, breast stroke). Volume-long slow distance T/Th/Sat for 30-40 min alternating between breast and back stroke.0

Hi, I used to be a very competitive swimmer was on the swim team. I have the chance to teach swimming again. Right now I am working on getting my body back and making the changes it takes to do that. I love to swim.0
