Corn tortillas expiration date?

Do you think they are ok to eat after the expiration date? They smell, look ok. But I'm always weird about expiration dates. We just don't seem to eat them fast enough, and I always end up throwing away half the package. I swear they always expire like a week after we buy them. :grumble:

I'm kind of one of those "if it doesn't smell bad, look bad, or taste funny then it's still good" kind of people. So, that in mind, I'd say keep them.

I always store tortillas, wraps etc. in the fridge. This helps me extend their shelf life a bit. But like any baked good stick to the "I opened it 7 days ago" rule and throw it away if you have had it open 1 week.

For future reference try to freeze them after you open them. Then just take one or two out at a time to use. I would separate them with wax paper first though! I say if they look and smell OK I bet they're fine.

I'm one of the "if it's not moldy or funny smelling, I'll still eat it" type people, probably because money is tight and it's wasteful to throw things away. I'd say go ahead and eat them, but it's up to you.

I keep corn tortillas forever! I haven't had a problem with them going bad. If they taste ok, smell ok, and look ok...I wouldn't worry.

I am an expiration date freak. If I have an open jar of mayo, I will buy a brand new one to use even if the opened jar has only been opened for a week.
If the tortillas don't have mold and don't smell funky, eat them. I keep mine in the fridge to extend their life.

I don't go through any bread type products fast enough these days (loaves of bread used to be gone inside of a week) so I have taken to freezing them as they come into the house, you can either pre-portion them out like a loaf of bread I'll freeze in a baggie with only 2 slices in it, then take one package out when I need bread for a sandwich the next day they're thawed by lunch time anyway if not by morning when I assemble the sandwich. Or you can freeze the whole loaf in its bag and use a butter knife to separate the slices you need as you need them. More work up front or more work at the time you want them for use...

The expiration date usually means sell by. I would not worry about it. I think if they are not stale or moldy they are fine. If you are still affraid, heat them in a dry pan or spray of oil.

I always buy my corn tortillas in the large packages (cheaper), freeze them and just take them out as I need them. They keep for a very long time in the freezer and take almost no time to defrost.

Ones that are bad usually look really bad, green or white mold and smell sour and rotten.

There are a few things I won't tempt fate with, but generally if a bread product looks and tastes fine you are in the clear as far as dangerous microbial agents are concerned.

    I say go for it!

Corn tortillas pretty much never go bad... I would eat them! There isn't much for the mold to grow on... as long as the bad has been closed I say go for it!
