Hi i can't seem to eat enough calories. I don't eat breakfast and never have so won't start. I drink water all day and have a low 300/400 calorie balanced lunch including a salad and a fruit salad and I have a healthy 500 calorie dinner followed by a yoghurt or two. I don't like snacking and never have but I am of a heavy weight. Can anyone suggest help or advice please.

Switch to higher calorie versions of what you already eat. Full fat dairy, avocado, peanut butter, butter, olive oil, nuts, etc.

Looking at your diary you either have days where you haven't logged anything (or have logged, say, one cup of coffee) or days where you've hit or gone over your goal. I'm not seeing any 900 calorie days.

But if you are struggling to eat enough then you could add more condiments and sauces and stuff, eat more calorie-dense foods, or have bigger portions (or some combination of all 3). You gained the weight by eating too many calories, so just put back in some of the foods you used to eat.

Log more? When you do log a full day, you seem to exceed the calories. Might want to make sure you are not over-eating before increasing your intake..

I'm dealing with my sweet dog who's struggling with cancer right now, so I'm not eating my calories either. Peanut butter is a good way to get a few extra calories if you're short at the end of the night. I had an apple with peanut butter for dinner last night for an additional 357 calories.

Eat some more of the stuff that caused you to need to lose weight in the first place. Just not too much.

When I started my "weight loss journey", I was 75 lbs overweight.

I didn't get to that point because I didn't know how to eat enough.

Just something for you to think about.

    "I eat low calorie + "I don't like eating snacks" + "I can't eat enough calories" = "I am of heavy weight"

    Does. Not. Compute.

When I was on Weight Watchers, there would sometimes be people on the forums who said they couldn't lose weight no matter what they did and that "I have always had a very small appetite. I've never been able to eat very much".

    Umm...what?

    Good advice isn't "slamming."

I actually am trying to help you.

You didn't get to the point where you needed to lose weight because you weren't eating enough. So how is it that now you suddenly can't make your calorie goal?

My guess is you're eating more than you think you are. Do you log every bite you take? Weigh all your food on a food scale?

To be successful at this, we have to be honest with ourselves. Sorry if you consider that "slamming".

You need to stop fooling yourself. I'm sorry you feel like you are being slammed but no one here is going to blow smoke up your rear and tell you that you are one of those special people (that don't exist) who gets fat on air. People here actually want you to succeed and that means telling you the truth, even when the truth might hurt a little. You are not, no way no how, only eating 900 calories. Since you are not ready to hear and face the truth, you are not ready to lose weight.

The truth is. You are not being honest. You are not weighing and logging ALL of your food. Therefore you have no idea exactly how much you really are eating.

Now you can stomp your feet and complain and whine and decide that everyone here is mean and you can quit. Or you can listen to the advice of people who are having success and make changes and do the things people suggest and lose the weight.

    Your choice.

I have gone back to full cream milk to get my cals up.
I like to exercise!!! And can't eat all my cals back.
I eat cheese and crackers with a glass of milk after dinner if I feel that I need to eat more.

I was just talking yesterday with a good friend about how we're conditioned to not offend people, so when someone is honest with us about the bonehead things we do, we take offense at it because we're used to "everyone gets a trophy!" kinds of treatment.

MFP is full of good, honest advice (and some bro-science and quasi-science you have to wade through) from people who've been where you've been. Try to listen with an open mind. 99.99% of anyone answering your questions is honestly here to help, though some people might approach the answers in a tough love/no nonsense kind of way.

The only way you became overweight is by consuming more calories than were needed. If you were 100 lbs overweight (and good job with your loss so far!) that means you know how to eat more than 900 calories per day. From the few things we've already learned about you, we can make fairly broad guesses as to your style when it comes to how you envision food and diets work. It sounds like you think to lose weight you have to eat all "healthy" "diet" "clean" food. You don't. You can eat exactly the same foods you ate to get 100 lbs overweight. You would just need to eat less of them.

Let's say it took you 5 years to gain 100 lbs. And let's say it takes 2800 calories per day to maintain your highest weight you were at. Science says you consumed about 3000 calories per day for 5 years. And now you're telling us you having a hard time eating more than 900 calories? This is why some people are telling you they don't believe you. You clearly know how to eat 3000 calories per day. We're not bashing you. I weighed 240 lbs. I lied to myself about food, too.

Give people's advice a chance before taking immediate offense at it, ok?

When I say "I can't eat all my cals back"
I mean safety eat them back.
I am afraid that I will go overboard and end up eating to much.
I also do most of my exercise in the arvo so I don't know how much more to eat during the day

open up your diary. Always best to start with that before asking for advice about what you could eat.

This...but also, I went to a dietician with that same question after a few forum posts convinced me I was starving myself.

He said I shouldn't try to meet a calorie minimum. If I go over my calories, no biggie, if I don't make a certain amount, I'll be fine, and to come back to him if I notice any symptoms of "malnutrition", which he gave me a lift of things to look out for...basically I'm just playing it by ear, and as long as I'm feeling energetic/good and losing weight I'm not gonna go out of my way to meet certain caloric minimums. Still, I've got a lot to lose, so take that with a grain of salt maybe =P

Then make your meals bigger than now, but smaller than then. Won't that work?

Why would you make your meals smaller if you are having trouble making your calories?

OP, are you looking for a list of calorie-dense foods to add to your meals? When I have extra calories to play with I will have things like: extra salad dressing, some nuts, a glass of wine, some chocolate, extra serving of the protein I'm having with lunch/dinner, a piece of fruit, a scoop of ice cream, nut butter, crackers, olives, a serving of chips and salsa, or a latte. These are the things I would add because I like them -- do you have some favorite foods that you aren't eating? If so, you could try adding a serving of those.

Still wondering if you weigh/measure all your food.

(The good news is if she's being accurate about losing 22 lbs in 12 weeks, that means she's eating more than 900 on average. My math, based on the little info we have, is that she's eating closer to 1300 every day on average.)

I really recommend you buy a digital kitchen scale and start weighing your food if you want to make sure you're eating at an appropriate deficit throughout your weight loss. If you want to open your diary and post your stats (height, weight, activity level) we can probably give you additional advice that's targeted to you.

You're not going to lose what you want to lose without a heaping helping of honesty and an attitude adjustment.
