Sadistic personal trainer..... Everyone needs a ‘Ben’

This time I decided to go for it I have talked a lot about losing weight have yoyo dieted and finally after topping the scales at 326lbs realising it was starting to impact on my effectiveness at work (I am a mental health nurse) I decided to make the changes necessary diet/exercise/lifestyle.

As part of this I decided that I would book some personal training sessions and have found Ben.... I was embarrassed/self conscious and frankly thought he and everyone else at the gym would stare and laugh. But no he took time to chat with me – we mostly talk about video games (he insists on doing this while I am struggling to breathe and remain co-ordinated on the elliptical trainer)

He makes me stretch and lunge in directions that my body never thought possible and while I sweat and grunt he takes the time to dream up new ways to torture me..... but you know what it is making a difference I already feel fitter and more flexible and frankly and I get enthusiastic about every trip to the gym.... He sends texts every few days both bulk communications and also individual messages to check in with his clients and I find this really motivating.

I see him once a week for an hour and am working out and swimming in between. Tonight towards the end of our hour he said he was enjoying himself so much and as he did not have another session directly after we would carry on ended up doing 1.5 hours... his enthusiasm is infectious and I am learning so much.....

I know this is a big financial commitment and I am lucky to have both the resources (We have made other sacrifices to make this possible) and a wonderfully supportive partner but if you can do it and can find the right trainer it really has made a difference.....

So one month done and 14+ lbs gone (I say + because I am due a weigh in on Saturday my 1 month anniversary) and here is to the rest of my longer and healthier life.....

I will also add to this my thanks to all the supportive people I have found on here for your advice and support. It’s a long road but the journey is more fun with other people..........

Thanks for reading

Lucy

That's great to see. I've seen too many people write about having bad trainers. Good to see there are good ones. Good luck!
  • I have a personal trainer also, as much as I "hate" her while Im working out, she has become a person in my life who is actually honest with me....I now love seeing her once a week, and I hope to one day be the inspiring person who has helped both you and I in our weight loss goals. Keep up the good work! You sound like you are doing well!!!

I have a great P.T too. I understand where you are coming from as it is a bit of an indulgence but so worth it. I have been seeing her for over 4 years now and she feels like part of the family. It is a weekly therapy for me and keeps me sane during a hectic and stressful working week. She also comes with me on races and doesn't charge me as she says she would be doing them anyway.

    Aren't we lucky??!

    Best wishes

Great Personal trainers make all the difference. I have the best PT in the world and I'm glad you've found one that motivates you too. Yay for your Ben

thats great news that you have someone that will motivate you to carry on and enjoy it, when you don't enjoy it then its really easy to give up. so keep up the good work

you are so lucky! I have had 2. The first one kept looking at her watch and stopped talking mid-sentence when her time was up. I would have to Pay her again to continue the conversation. Then, at my next session, she told me they undercharged me at the gym (as her fees had gone up) and I owed her money. I was shocked, really. It wasn't my fault they screwed up and she ended up losing me as a client for $10.00.

My next trainer was checking out all the cute girls in the gym when he was working with me. Ugh. Quit him too.

    So congrats Lucy!

Great you have found something that keeps you motivated.

Did you try group exercise? It is included in most gym's memberships. So no extra money commitment and you can find friends in class, too that keep you motivated.

Plus the group ex instructors are all real nice :) I go out with my class (parts of it) every week once for drinks and dinner (alcohol is voluntary, though). That keeps me motivated, too.

    Congrats Lucy!

I have a personal trainer too and while I curse him to high heaven the day after my workout and have even thrown a medicine ball or two at his head, I couldn't have done this without him. I look and feel so much better... and its all due to my trainer.
