Sometimes I put my finger on my wrist while I look at my watch and count. That is about as cheap as you can get. :)

I have a chest strap HRM I bought at Performance Bike several years ago. I think I paid around $30. I see now it is $50 for the Polar HRM.

I use lifetrak, I got it on sale for $39.99 at walgreens but the normal price is $49.99. I like it, it has good reviews, and it's water proof :)

I second the suggestion for the Polar H7 sensor. Very good device, in my opinion.

I got a bluetooth HR chest strap off ebay for about $12. I pair it with my phone. There are a lot of free and paid apps that can receive HR data.

I just checked and there are lots of cheaper ones available now, but this is the one I got. Been using it since May with no problems. Had to change the battery once.

I found my Garmin Forerunner 305 on Craigslist for just $45.

I had a Timex that worked just fine until I was not paying attention and destroyed the face of the watch.
Think it was about $35 and came with a chest strap.
