You lose weight by eating fewer calories than you burn—period. So learn to log everything you eat accurately & honestly, rather than eating sad salads of sadness for lunch. Logging works.
That said, I like Chipotle for lunch. All that protein + fiber keeps me full for hours. And they post their nutritional information: http://chipotle.com/nutrition-calculator
Or I go to the food carts: portion control + a walk. (And yummier than any brown bag lunch I could ever prepare.) The halal cart has tilapia and white sauce with salad or mixed veg. If you ask, the arepa cart will give you Peruvian salad instead of rice. And Bengali kati rolls are the perfect street food to eat while you walk.0 -
"Salads of Sadness" LOL, I love that.
But editorgirl has a point. Eat as close to your normal meals as you can, and just log everything.
You'll see where the calorie traps are, and start to modify them. Don't try and eat salads all the time, you won't last.0 -
the upbeat personality! Being funny is most definitely the sexiest characteristic!

that is something my son would say lol if you like to eat out always check the nutrition facts on the restaurant you are heading to. It helps you have an idea of calorie intake and you can just tell the waiter what you would like instead of looking at the menu.0

@editorgrrl @annaskiski @mewilliams11 @lpamm1226 lol. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately these "salads of sadness" will be the end of me. I'll admit that some taste great but not pizza great. You know what I mean. I've been working out 5 days a week and giving myself a cheat meal on Sunday's to keep my sanity. I stopped eating out as much but I'm a man and everyone knows that men can't cook as good a women. Since I've been cooking for myself it's been. Boiled broccoli, grilled chicken, hard boiled eggs, salad. but there isn't much flavor. If I'm going to add fitness and health to my life story is hope to eat something tasty. Thanks for all the advice peeps. You guys are awesome! #saladofsadness lol0

Man (and woman) cannot exist on salad alone! I still eat absolutely everything that I would eat at maintenance, just less of it. How about seafood, sweet potato, oh and oven bake your broccoli with a little garlic and olive oil, so much better than boiled! I like strong flavours - a little anchovy goes a long way. A little bit of strong, sharp cheese. a couple of teaspoons of balsamic vinegar as a salad dressing...dammit, I'm hungry now0

I know you think you can't cook well, but pizza dough is SO easy to make, and if you make it yourself you know exactly what goes into it (and you can make healthier choices as to what goes into and onto the pizza)! And you can make pizza crust out of potatoes, yams, or zucchini, and all you really need is something to grate the veggies with.
Zucchini crust directions: http://www.kalynskitchen.com/2012/08/zucchini-crust-pizza-margherita.html
Cauliflower pizza crust: http://tastykitchen.com/blog/2013/08/cauliflower-crust-pizza/
Sweet potato: http://amazonashley.squarespace.com/blog/2014/11/12/whole-30-recipe-sweet-potato-crust
Hope I'm not coming on too strong, but I really believe that anyone who wants to can learn to cook very well with just a little dedication, and that cooking is THE easiest way to eat healthier. When you know exactly what's going in, you can change what goes in and be more mindful of how much of it you eat. My roommate and I can eat an entire batch of these cookies together in one sitting and I don't feel guilty at all: http://www.theburlapbag.com/2012/07/2-ingredient-cookies-plus-the-mix-ins-of-your-choice/

Why do you call it a "salad of sadness"? Maybe you haven't found the right mix. Some options - bay shrimp plus pico de gallo. Off the shelf easy, and super-healthy. I have actually grown pretty fond of my cucumber/roma tomato/red bell pepper/red onion salad (I make a huge batch on Sunday afternoon, and portion of 3-5 servings, then add tuna and feta to each serving right when I eat it. Seeding the tomatoes *really* helps keep the salad from getting soggy.) I realized I don't care for most salad greens, so my salad doesn't include them. (Although I actually like spinach, diced chicken and mandarin oranges as a salad. And I have been known to deliberately order a Cobb salad or a Salad Nicoise. Opt for a salad of sparkle and joy!)0

Please don't blame OP! I was trying to make a point that you can eat anything in moderation and still lose weight. I never, ever waste my calories on meh food.0 -
Chef shmalan is about to destroy his kitchen. That's me by the way. I'm actually kind of excited for dinner tonight. Thanks @tkphotogirl @VervainHelsdottir you guys made me so hungry and thanks for the links. I'll be reading up on my healthy cuisine. Thanks for the push good luck today!0

Have you tried baked chicken? I use this method:
http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-cook-the-best-chicken-breasts-in-the-oven-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-211453
The chicken stays fairly moist, and picks up a lot of flavor from whatever spices you use before you bake it.
Because I'm not averse to canned or pre-prepped foods, I make some pretty easy dinners. I bake the chicken, then portion it out into 5-7 ounce portions. My roommate and I both like Indian food, so I will dice two portions of baked chicken, and add that to a skillet with a diced red onion, some garlic, and a jar of simmer sauce. Serve as is, or over broccoli slaw. (When I am willing to spend the calories on grains, I include a portion of rice for myself, in lieu of the broccoli slaw.)
Another option is diced red onion, garlic, and a can of diced tomatoes with 2 portions of chicken.
This is another of my go-to recipes (minus the cheese).
http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/salsa_verde_chicken_bake/
It also works with marinara sauce in place of the salsa verde.

If I don't comment this evening it's because I've burned my house down trying to use this place some people call "the kitchen". Thank for all the ideas and recipes. I'll let you know how they turn out.0

I agree. Even my low calorie foods are foods I enjoy. One of the happiest surprises was realizing that most snack foods were really pretty "meh" compared against to some of my favorite healthy foods.
"Oh, no, I must forego 140 calories/ounce of "sugar, fat and salt" in favor of 89 calories/cup of fresh, ripe raspberries! Woe is me!"
"No, Br'er Fox, please, not the 42 calorie Dove chocolate square! No!!!! I would much rather have the 100 calorie sweet, yet dry fig newton."
And sometimes I spend the calories for *really awesome* food - but if I spent 10% or more of my calorie goal on a food, that food gets my *entire* attention for as long as it takes to eat it, savoring and tasting each bite.
(Down 74 pounds (of 95) in 14 months, while still embracing a philosophy of "While we live, let us LIVE!" I will trade my rate of progress for never having felt I was condemned to an ascetic existence of nothing but "salads of sadness".
It's all about balance - portion control (especially with the energy dense foods!), really appreciating the occasional energy dense food choices, and finding nutrient dense foods that you genuinely enjoy.0 -
"You don't make friends with salad" it's a sad truth.0

Oh you're a funny one add!0

Add me, I need a laugh to help me along this lengthy weight loss process0

I definitely agree with eating what makes you happy in moderation! You can lose weight eating a lot of "bad" foods, just comes down to portion control. If I want to have a high calorie meal, I exercise extra that day and I am able to remain under my calorie goal.

Check out that website for AWESOME "diet" food! And most of her recipes are fairly quick simple to make, they definitely do not require a chef.0 -
This is what I made for dinner tonight. Hatch chili stuffed pork chops (HEB premade them), and I topped it with a quinotto with chia seeds, and made some sweet potatoes and spaghetti squash. See my diary for calories. Think you would be surprised!0
