Got snarked at the gym today

I lifted today! That's the good part. A few other people were in the gym, including one girl who was lifting much heavier than I was- I'm using fairly small weights because I haven't lifted forever and I'm only a few weeks into doing it again- I'd rather be safe and build up to where I was than hurt myself.
After she was done she walked over, DROPPED a huge dumbbell next to me and said "try lifting something real" and walked out. I just kept lifting (I was in the middle of a set) and didn't respond... just kind of can't believe some people are actually like that. I'm still glad I lifted today, but with all the other stress in my life I really didn't need that during my workout.

Welcome!

Wow. Just wow. Whatever that woman's issues are, they are hers, not yours. You keep doing what you're doing.

Um, WHAT??? Completely agree with @SueInAz . Wow, that poor gal must have some serious issues. Keep up doing what you're doing and I'm really glad you completed your set and didn't even acknowledge her! WIN for you!

She sounds like a nasty piece of work - better forgotten and ignored.

    Gratz on your lift :)

You're not supposed to drop the weights! If she does it again, call her out on it. XD If she's going to try and be a snarky *kitten*, just be a smartass back at her. You're fine with what you're doing, and if she has a problem with it, so be it.

Good for you getting back to the gym.I respect you for hanging in there after that.

First, she earned a VIP spot in hell for that act. Yes, I said it! You do not deserve to be treated that way at gym or anywhere else. You don't need to explain yourself to her or anybody. You just keep on doing whatever you need to do to be healthy. I don't lift heavy weights myself. I go for 3 reps using low, slightly heavier, low so I am challenging my muscles without injury. Slow and consistent progress wins every time in fitness. Stay strong!

25 years of spending tons of time in gyms and I've yet to see anything like this occur on any level. Add me to the list of people that doubt this really happened.

i was just going to say the same...

i've belonged to a lot of gyms on and off over the years and I've never seen anything like this occur.

If in fact this did happen, you should have reported it to management.

So you're saying it's not just me?

It sucks that that happened to you :(

Just keep doing what you're doing and don't let this discourage you from hitting the gym. Remember that workout time is you time and that nobody can take that away from you if you don't let them.

    ^Have to agree with the above. It's a bit...hmmmm.

If (and a huge if at that) this was all true and if it were to happen again, you should report that.

I agree with this for sure.

Wow, really people? Just because it's never happened to you CLEARLY means it has never happened to someone else.

Is it because some women can't get along with each other.

it's a bit out there....not saying it's impossible...but really, a lot of people here are pretty experienced in this RE...and well...yeah...never seen it and I've been in and out of gyms for 25+ years.

also, a lot of people on MFP make *kitten* up all the time...stick around awhile and you'll see...lots of bullshitters and trolls around these parts.

If this was a woman telling another woman her clothes were slutty or how to cook better I might believe the story. I sort of doubt this actually happened.

Pretty much, yes. Well, not just me. Never happened to anyone I know, male or female. Never happened to anyone that anyone I know knows. Never heard a gym employee relate a story like this. Never overheard someone telling a story like this. Never read it in a magazine. At a certain point, an unlikely event is unlikely.

WOW! This just pisses me off to no end! How incredably egotistical and hateful. There is a name for people like that...Bullies. You just keep on being smart and doing what is best for YOU! Screw what anyone else says or thinks. It is not a competition and no one knows why someone lifts as they do. I have been thru that due to an injury and someones comment almost made me quit going. So glad i didnt quit and please dont let it deter you from your fitness journey. Her karma will come believe me.

It reads like someone trying to start a dumpster fire in the forum. The op hasn't even come back.

It's the gym in my apartment building- there's a handful of cardio machines, two weight machines and a rack of dumbbells. Building management is more concerned with moving people in and out than someone being mean, and TBH this happening one time is not something I'd make an official complaint to anyone about.

It's just something that made me feel bad and I've ALSO never had anything like this happen to me, so I figured I might get support here... I guess it's nice to know this isn't a normal thing at gyms?

& thanks to people being encouraging.

Well! As an older weak swimmer I kept to the wall and was harassed by younger men swimming too fast to close. I did complain to them and the guard and they were out. Things do happen sometimes but not very often.

I agree, I am very skeptical that this actually happened the way it was described, or at all.
Also, the OP's profile is sketchy itself...no gender, no pic...

Regardless of whether this happened or didn't happen, this forum is called Motivation and Support. Last time I checked, telling someone that they're a liar because their story is unlikely in your frame of experience is neither motivating or supportive.
