Feeling sick at the gym

So I've been given a regular workout to do by a personal trainer, and it feels really good when I do it.

However, on two occasions now I have felt sick. The first time, I was actually sick, and I realise it was due to a lack of eating before I went and a lack of water whilst I was there. Stupid me, I know, but you live and learn!

Today, I ate a decent breakfast, had plenty of water, but still began to feel sick to the point where I finished before I had completed my workout. I then feel completely and utterly drained of energy.

Any tips on how to stop this from happening? Or tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Also, feel free to add me

How long did you leave it between eating breakfast and working out? For many it's a case of trial and error when knowing what to eat before exercising. Maybe try having something smaller, like a banana, pre-workout.

Also, are you monitoring your heart rate? Sickness/nausea is a common side effect of pushing too hard and nearing maximum heart rate.

Sounds like you're just pushing hard on your workouts now you have the food and hydration in place. So maybe back off a little until you start getting fitter.

Only tip I have on food is to limit your fats prior to working out. They slow stomach emptying and can make you feel a bit sick.

If it makes you feel any better a killer HIIT or leg day can still send me running for the nearest trash can on occasion lol

Could you be unintentionally holding your breath when you lift/push/pull or whatever you're doing?

make sure you're breathing- that can make you light headed.

what kind of work out are you doing- hard to really give any thoughts without more detail.

I had this issue and must be aware of my breathing and pace between sets.
    That cured the problem.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback.

Karen - I think it is a case of finding what suites me best. I usually can't be bothered to go in the evening, but I know that I always seem to be okay at that time of day, so perhaps I should just change to working out later in the day.

Ironmaiden - I don't think I'm pushing too hard, the workout isn't too strenuous (it was at first, but I'm growing accustomed to it). Good tip on the fats though, I'll bear that in mind

Everyone else - I think breathing could definitely be key. I do sometimes struggle with the pattern of my breathing, and maintaining a regular pattern of breathing, especially when exercising. I'm going to see if I can notice any issues with my breathing and see if that helps me to improve.

Thanks for all the support
