Hi there,
I'm hoping someone can help! I've gone to my third Pilates class and am getting there with all the moves with the exception of the roll up. Does anyone have any tips for improving or additional exercises I can do to allow me do a roll up in one fluid motion and without grabbing my thighs for support.
TIA

Practice. It's basically your stomach muscles aren't strong enough to roll you up.

That's very true! Lol it's embarrassing how weak they are! I guess if I keep at core work they'll build up.

Pilates is all about progression and working at your own level. If you can't do the roll up yet, make sure the instructor knows and s/he can give you an easier variant to get your strength to where it needs to be. In the class I used to go to, some people would do a 'roll back' instead.

Do the modified movement. As you keep doing it, you'll find that you may not need to hold onto your thighs as much. I love doing the roll-up, even if I end up halfway up my mat afterwards. lol

Thanks to all who replied. Regarding the modified movement - what is it?

Ask your teacher for a modified version, then s/he can teach you to do it properly. I'm thinking something like this: http://pilates.about.com/od/abdminals/ss/RollBack.htm
