Is it possible to exercise too much?

I've been so active today and done so many exercises not including taking care of the kids.. I'm to the point where I'm so sore.. just stretching hurts a bit. Do you think maybe I over-did it? I just find myself with so much energy since I started my diet and I want to get into shape fast.. but should I slow down?

If you start to pee black that is a bad sign. If you are just sore, maybe I'd let your sore muscles have a day to relax, but you can always still do cardio. You know your body and if you are worried you should do what feels right, whether that is slowing down or continuing at your current pace!

I think its great you have all this energy, put it to good use!

    Good luck (:
  • I basically did the same thing... worked out nearly every day for the past 5 months. I did alternate cardio with weights, but I guess it still was too much. Now my body has rebelled. My knees in particular. So I have to slow down. I"m not happy about it. But I will learn a lesson from it. Once I'm back at full capacity, I will take days off.
Hope you are feeling better soon. Just remember to keep at it, stay accountable with logging food and you will do great!

    "should I slow down?"

Let's see, you've said that you haven't tended to your children and you've worked out so much that you're in pain.

If I were you, I'd get on a fitness site and get info for "new exercisers" (new word).

Another option, and I've used it even though I've been an athlete for most of my life, is "Workouts for Dummies".

    Amazon is your friend:

Well I think if you are just starting out it normal to be sore and tired and feeling basically like you are hurting. How much are you doing and what are you doing?

No, she didn't say that she hasn't tended to her children - she said that she's exercised a lot ON TOP OF the regular activity she gets tending to her children...

And yes, you can definitely work out too much. I've run marathons and if you overdo it you get an injury and then you suffer. You should pace yourself, because weight loss is a marathon too. You should gradually increase your level of activity, and you should always have a recovery day. That's not to say you can't go for a walk at a leisurely pace. But your recovery day is a day where you don't push your body to exertion.

Eye on the prize - a "healthier you" means injury free too!!

What are you talking about not 'tending' to my kids? Of course I take care of them.. I'm the only one around to... I just was excluding that from what I consider as my exercise.... sorry for the confusion.

I'm doing exercises like walking, belly dancing, vigorous swimming, and weights for about an hour.. one at the time. I take an hours break between workouts to tend to my kids. I came in from the pool at 7:45 and have been relaxing since.

You want to be careful to not overdue it just to allow your body to heal! If it is overworked too much during the day it won't have a chance to heal! That is super important! If you have any more questions you are welcome to message or friend me!

I don't think she actually said she hadn't tended her children. I think she was saying that she wasn't including the activity of tending to the children as working out, so those activities were in addition to her workouts.

As far as being sore, a certain amount is a good sign that you're pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone, which you need to do to get results, but if you find that you are so sore it makes it difficult to perform normal fuctions, or if you are not recovering after getting good rest, I would back off a bit. You'd be tearing your muscles down instead of building them up if you continue to overdo. Recovery time is an essential component.

Good luck with your program, and if you want to get rid of some of that excess energy, PLEASE, send it to me!!!

Don't worry - all the moms know exactly what you meant!

I'm a firm believer in giving my body at least 2 days off a week. Exercising is good, but other aspect of life needs attention too.
