Would cutting back saturated fat to 5 grams / day be too low?
My LDL is also in the red zone.
My total cholesterol is right around 200.
I exercise, so now I need to focus on food.

Holly molly, I mussed up.
Raise my HDL !!!!!!

I am certain you are trolling now. Why would you lower good cholesterol?

Ok , go back into your post and hit the edit button . then you can change it . write raise instead of lower so people will know what your talking about.

Troll means someone that's playing games .

Just go back and edit so people will understand the question your trying to ask

my cholesterol is sky high. my total cholesterol is 263 and my triglycerides level is 475.
my doctor has me on a very strict diet.
    NO sugar
    NO alcohol
    NO bread
    NO potatoes
    NO pasta
    4g/day Omega-3
eat more chicken & fish & turkey and less red meat.

i do not look at my saturated fats, etc. at this point, i am just trying to do all the above + exercise.

    Eat coconut oil

    Do some weight lifting

Reduce eliminate the cholesterol laden sausages and junk like that

    Take fish oil caps

I went from high cholesterol to 127 in 9 months

Weigh lifting raises good number. Medium chain triglycerides are good for cholesterol too, the coconut oil aspect.

    That was my plan

The MFP app will count up your ingested cholesterol and fat. Start there

I posted a similar question yesterday and got a ton of responses.
I know that eating nuts, oats, and high fiber helps raise good cholesterol.

i'm 35 so i'm certainly not a teenager, but i have known what troll meant since it was only a certain type of lawyer, and i knew what it meant as soon as it started referring to people like you....lol.

i lowered my overall cholesterol and raised my hdl both into good levels simply by losing weight....i had no other plan or intention. i didn't eat certain foods, didn't take supplements...didn't listen to anything dr oz said....

the two best things you can do are lose weight and exercise.

Losing weight (24 lbs) and exercising has lowered my Total Cholesterol(215 to 180), LDL(131 to 113) and HDL(59 to 45). I was a couch potato before. My HDL sadly went down but is still above the minimum required of 39. Since HDL is supposed to mop up after the bad LDL, if you lower LDL sufficiently (eg down to 70s), then it's not as alarming if HDL is lower. My analogy is that your body doesn't need to produce many garbage trucks(HDL) if you keep the garbage level(LDL) low. This logic makes me feel better.

So exercise and weight loss STILL didn't fix my LDL which as of July was still off at 113(should be under 100). To fix this, I've cut WAY back on ALL fat (about 5% of total calories). This means no eggs, dairy, meat, fish AND no added oils. My diet is now mostly lentils, beans, oats, brown rice, potatoes, veggies and fruits. I'm experimenting with this for 3 months and will retest to see what happens.
