Confusion - amounts

I am in England and we don't use the measurement "one cup" here. I have had a good search around but cannot find an English equivalent - or an explanation as to how much one cup is.
Could anyone help please ? Are the general weights and measurements used hidden away somewhere I not found ?
Thanks - Lindy

I am not sure what you would use in place of "one cup"....but 8 oz. is the equivalent of one cup in liquids....0

1 cup = 8 fluid ounces = 240 ml0

Thanks - but - one cup of lettuce for example ??? Do I find a cup which holds 240 mls and use that ?
Yu see - I would normally be using ounces for weight and mls or pints for liquid -0 -
