Zumba

I can't find zumba listed in the database. The closest I have found is aerobic dance and for 1 hour burns about 340 calories. Do you think this is close? The others in my class claim it's more around 900.

I was doing Zumba and according to my instructor it can burn 600-700 calories a class. Of course it depends on how much effort you are giving it too. If you are really working it I think 340 is low.

I would recommend a heart rate monitor to know for sure, but I wear mine to my 1 hour Zumba class and I never burn less than 1000, though its usually closer to 1100. If I'm doing the Zumba at home on my PS3 I burn about 900, so I would say the estimate from the others in your class are more accurate than just logging it as aerobic dance! Hope that helps!

I've heard 1000 for an hour. I know one girl, a little smaller than me burned 880 for an hour. I'm hopefully going to figure out my new HRM for zumba class tomorrow.

I have no idea about an accurate calorie burn for Zumba--I have heard that it's a lot more, too. But I have been erring on the side of caution & I count it as "Dancing, aerobic, ballet or modern, twist". It's 342 calories for 60 minutes... I have been eating my exercise calories, too, and have still been losing...

It all depends on your weight, height, etc.. You burn calories a lot slower when you weigh less. You need a HRM to measure a little more accurately.

I have to add, though, that I would much rather believe the other numbers!!! lol

I personally put in 10 calories for a minute. I am probably doing it to low, but rather too low than too high

I agree with the person above me. My trainer said 10 cals/minute is a safe bet.

However, I consistently bank about 600-800 cals for an hour zumba workout!

I log it as aerobic high impact which gives just under 500 calories per hour. I usually am near my MFP calorie goal and have been losing so I figure it must be pretty close.

Wow- you guys are fast! Thanks for the advice. I will definitely buy a HRM. Any suggestions on what kind, brand, where to buy?
