A bit of a turning point

I have used the scientific method to come to the conclusion that while there are people out there who can drink and meet their fitness goals, I am not among them.

Today I say goodbye to whiskey and hello to whistles; goodbye to 6 packs and hello an 8 pack.

Just needed to put this somewhere to help keep me honest.

Cheers everyone.

I drink way less. It's a bit of a challenge for me, living in NYC and trying to be social. Plus I play in a band and we have bar gigs. I just try to pre-log something I can really look forward to when I get home! Last night I made it through the gig without a single sip and I was shocked at how many calories I had to play with when I got home. I was so happy I skipped it :)

I don't know how I'd manage to get to my goal weight if I drank alcohol. Its hard enough to keep my sugar consumption down, so God Bless you if you can manage a drink and still reach your goals (talking to anyone who may read this post). If you think about it, society expects us to drink regularly around the college years as well as adulthood, so doesn't this, by itself, set us all up for health failure?

@arditarose I am in a similar situation. I live in wine country which has also now become a haven for craft beer, especially the "west coast IPA". Drinking is huge out here and my group of friends embrace it. Fortunately I have another guy in the group who is fairly serious about fitness so we can sort of bounce things off each other and have some solidarity. Still sucks though.

Only if you are ruled by societies expectations! Society doesn't fail us, we fail ourselves IMO.

I'm going to have to say no on this as well. You are responsible for your actions.

No. There is nothing unhealthy about drinking alcohol in moderation. In fact, it's been shown to have heart health benefits. Much like food, it's only when you overdo it that it is unhealthy.

Personally I log my bedtime glass of wine first thing so I can plan it into my daily calories/macros ;) it's essential to my sanity. But definitely wish you luck with this :)

I can fit alcohol into my maintenance calories but I did struggle when trying to lose.
I try to save calories where I can elsewhere (without depriving myself of food) and be aware of lower calorie options. I love beer, but alternating a 250+ calorie pint for a 70 calorie vodka, lime & soda is sometimes a trade off I choose to make.
The biggest issue I have now is planning my long runs around social occasions where I think I might want a drink - I'm definitely not going to be able to get up early and run for an hour and a half if I've been out doing shots until 3am. Unfortunately.

One thing that has made drinking less a bit easier at social gatherings is that we are always at an event, a concert, comedy show, etc. I have a lot of acquaintances and not close friends so there's a lot of quick chats and catching up. No one really notices that I'm not drinking much, I have something to focus on so it doesn't bother me, and I always have a delicious dessert logged that I'm looking forward to when I get home!
