Hey everyone!

My boyfriend just got me a pull-up bar for my house and I'm so excited, except for one little problem, I can't really do pull-ups. I've been really working on my upper body strength recently, but it's been a slow process and I'm just now starting to see some results. I really want to be able to do pull-ups, hence the gift, but I don't really know where to start. Any advice or tips on how to get started?

Thanks!!!!!

Use a chair to assist you have to start somewhere until you become stronger.

On the P90x videos it shows you can actually us a chair. Only put one foot on it while the other hangs to catch your self if you slip and slid it out just enough where you still have to use your arms to pull up and not just your leg. Great way to start. !

I must be in mom-mode cause I read "pull-ups" and immediately thought that maybe someone else is trying to potty train a child!

I was just thinking this same thing. Here's a slightly different way to do it, but doesn't look as safe:

Do negatives...use the chair to help you get to the up position and then just use your arms to lower yourself slowly down

There also several pull-up assist devices available, which you can use to get started. The Lifleline Pullup Revolution is one.

Me too. The sad thing is that my kids are 7 and 8 and we have not used pull-ups for a long time.

Thanks everyone (including making me laugh about the potty-training)! I can't wait to get started and hopefully soon I'll be doing some real un-assisted pull-ups.

LOL when I read the topic, I was thinking pull-up training underpants for kids.... That's what working around kids all the time does to you

I would put it low enough that you have to lift your feet off the ground but not so high that you are dangling.

    Good luck!

I started yesterday with negative pull-ups and I"m already seeing progress. I'd say I can do about 65% of a normal pull-up so I'm slowly getting closer. I'm gonna keep working at it every day.

If you can lower the pull-up bar "arms distance" off the floor. you can sit on the floor with your heals out infront and pull your self up to the bar. If to easy put some weights in your lap.

If you can do about 10 of these do sets of your max reps, I have plenty of more advanced routines you can try.
