Ladies, what to wear for a wedding?

Going to a wedding in December (brother in law). I don't have anything nice for cold weather... I have a few dresses but I'm not sure they would be dressy enough...

Don't want to spend a fortune, would rather be able to try it on first, I have a large frame with chubby hips (see profile pics - only lost an inch or so since and will probably not lose more by then) and usually 'fit and flare' dresses fit me the best...

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Will the wedding be in the daytime or evening? How formal will it be? What is your budget? What is your dress size?

If you don't think you will have upcoming occasions to wear the dress again, you might want to look into Rent the Runway. I've never used it, but have friends who have been delighted with the service.

Good idea but I have a cat and kids and I just don't dare LOL.

It's an afternoon wedding but there's a reception after. No idea how formal it is (they haven't really given us much information)... Dress size is S or 6, but obviously it depends on the brand and that's why I'd like to try it first.

Nordstrom has free shipping, free returns, and a large section of dresses for under $150. I have found lots of great ones there, and you can sort by the style of the dress so you don't have to trudge through pages of dresses you know won't work for you.

You can always look at stores like Ross, or the rack, or clearance too. Sometimes you can find really nice dresses at thrift shops too, might require digging, though. Sometimes you can find really cute stuff off of fb sale groups, see if there are any in your area, I prefer some formal items used, then I'm not paying top dollar, especially if I'm not going to wear it very often, or only once.

With the exception of velvet dresses for winter, most formal dresses are pretty seasonless. It's not uncommon to see spaghetti strap cocktail dresses in December (perhaps with a sweater or wrap for the ceremony...will that be held in a church or other house of worship where more modest attire is preferred?) In any case, there aren't really a ton of options for "cold-weather" fancy dresses...unless you are thinking of a knit or sweater dress which might not be formal enough for the occasion.

If you do want something with a sleeve, these all have the silhouette you are thinking of (although my caveat is that dresses with sleeves can look a little matronly)

I'll see what else I can come up with after I take my kids to karate. I like shopping vicariously.

I've found that Macy's offers a large online selection of dresses compared to the store and for events I have ordered sometimes two in each size and just returned what didn't work to the store.

    Long sleeve wrap dress.

Pretty but these don't usually look great on me (damn hips).

I'm cheap though and really would rather not spend more than $80. I did see some I like on the Nordstrom site but out of my price range...

    Will check Macy's!

Have you checked out modcloth.com? I like that they indicate whether it's a bigger or smaller version of a size, tell you when to size up or size down, and have generally helpful reviews by people who own the garment.

I recently got a sleeveless dress with wildflowers all over it and a pink cardigan and wore it to a garden party wedding. It was perfect. I've never had a problem with their sizing and I'm a 18-22 depending on the cut and brand. Sometimes they have awesome sales and, also, if you sign up and wait a day they'll send you a coupon :>
