Calories trend - do spikes in consumption matter?

Hi,

I'm a male around 30 years old and 5'10", 155 pounds weight. I set a goal for myself to lose 5 pounds in 5 weeks - so my fitness pal came up with a daily calorie budget of 1500 calories.

I find that my daily calorie intake on average is around 1800 calories - above my target but below my "maintenance calories" of 2100 calories. So I am losing weight but slower than goals. However my calories consumption contains big spikes - for example on Tue I ate only 1200 calories and on Wed I had 3000 calories.

So my question is this - do the spikes in my intake matter for weight loss, or is the average the only thing that matters?

Thanks much!

Spikes, or calorie cycling, doesn't matter as you can count your weekly caloric deficit or day to day.

Something is wrong. If maintenance is 2100, then 1500 isnt 1lb/week, it is 1.2lb/week. You may want to fix that.

Why do you want to lose weight? 155 lbs at 5'10" seems pretty light already. Rippetoe might be a little extreme with his all grown men should be at least 200 lbs, but 155 is pretty light already. It might benefit you more to work on gaining muscle rather than losing weight -- just a suggestion.

As for calorie cycling, it does work for some people -- especially for those that are already rather lean. Check out places like leangains for more informaiton.

You are 155 at that height and want to LOSE weight? You really need to reconsider that position. I'm 15 lbs heavier and I'm a "skinny guy".
