I have become aware of a problem i have when i walk any sort of distance. Its not my feet, its not even my legs, its my ribs!!

It feels muscular and its predominately on the left side. To be honest its more discomfort more than pain but it is beginning to put me off walking. Strangely, it doesnt occur when im running!!

Anyone got any advice?

bewildered !!!! me to be honest would see a doctor. walking is on of the most natural forms of exercise we do so get it checked just in case..it might be something as silly as the way you walk maybe you put more pressure on one side of your body than the other ???
hope you find what the problem is xx

    I have a slightly off-the-wall suggestion!

I sometimes suffer from what I call 'shoulder stitches' when I run. I did a bit of research and found out that it was referred pain from my side - i.e. I was getting a stitch in my shoulder because my diaphragm was being jiggled about when I was running hard and breathing hard. The usual location of this is at the back of the shoulder but, from my research, I've learnt that stitches can be referred to a variety of sites including the intercostal muscles between the ribs.

I have noticed that if I am carrying a backpack when I walk (which I do most of the time), I can aggravate the same point on my shoulder despite the fact that I'm clearly not doing heavy exercise or even breathing heavily.

Don't know if that helps at all but it's the only thing I can think of off hand!

    Hi Jeff,
To be honest I'd get to the doctors first and get a thorough check up done. I know you have to have them as a truck driver every now and then but the extra check may pay dividends. After all both my wife and I were convinced I was having a bad case of Indigestion, and 12 months later well you already know what happened to me. So take the bull by the horns from the outset and get it checked out !!!!!!!!!
    Regards
