Looking for advice

So, I'm looking to achieve several goals over the course of the next year, and if I can achieve them concurrently, that'd be awesome. Right now, I'm 35 y/o, 5'10", 310 lbs (already lost 18 lbs in the last 6 weeks). My weight loss goal is to get down to 200.
I'm currently walking an average of 2 miles a day. Every time I go for a walk, I increase my distance. I try to keep my pace at about 20 min/mile. My routine is 1.5 miles during lunch M-W-F on a treadmill, 4 miles Tu-Th in the evening, and 2.5 miles on Sat-Sun in the evening. Again, this has all increased from just the half mile I started out with 6 weeks ago, and will continue to get longer. My goal for this is, in Nov 2016, participate in a Turkey Trot with my daughter to run a 5k.
Problems that exist are that I do occasionally have lower back pain, and I've got arthritis in my knees. I don't let this stop me. I'm a programmer, so I do spend the majority of my day sitting down. Though, I do take breaks and get up and walk around a bit.
So, my questions have to deal with timing: eating before/after workouts. I'd like to start being a morning person, but I just don't know if it's better to eat before or after. Also, when would be a good time to substitute walks/runs for lifting? My goal would be to add some definition, and go for the mystical "6 pack" or as close to it.
Thanks for any and all help! I'm looking forward to progressing and sharing my new start with MFP!

Well done on what you have done so far. Lifting can be done alongside your walk/runs and it also helps to burn fat effectively. I lift 3x a week, run an hour a week and do Taekwondo 3 hours a week. That, combined with eating more healthily, is working wonders for me and is something that I now do as part of my lifestyle. I have lost more inches that ponds. I'm 47 and 5'6.0

Definitely start lifting now. It preserves the muscle you lose when losing weight. I'd eat before walking but eat after lifting (unless you are really hungry).
You might look into Lower-Crossed Syndrome to see if you have it, so you can stretch things out if you do. It's common in jobs like yours, especially if you have lower back pain. When you walk, you'll want your pelvis to tilt correctly, which is true for everyone anyway0
