15 months of success

I had my 15 month progress update/measurements with my trainer today. In the last 3 months:
- 18.6 pounds (-105 lbs since start 15 months ago)
- 6.5 inches (-54.5 inches total)

I have dropped major inches off every measuring site, but the changes don't always come as one might expect. Sometimes one site shows lots of change and another none. Sometimes my right arm or leg shows different change than the left side. Sometimes I lose from my hips but not waist, or the opposite. Sometimes when weight loss slows, the inches come off faster.

I've averaged about 1.5 pounds per week over this journey, but it has NOT been at a steady rate the whole time. I've had medical issues. I've had emergency surgery. I've had life stress. I've had pain. But I keep doing the same thing every day and week and do not second guess my plan. We cannot stress out over HOW the changes are occurring, we simply have to stay with the plan and see what happens.

My major drops in 15 months have been 11 inches off bust, 12.5 inches off waist, 13.5 inches off hips. My only increases have been in strength and endurance!!

This is a long and winding road. Stay consistent and you WILL see results. Results will keep you motivated. Just remember, we cannot dictate which changes, or how much change, we will see when. Keep it going, everyone!

PS: Threads I "could" have posted instead:

"Help! I lost inches from my hips but not my waist. Should I find a new trainer?"
"What is wrong? I lost 18 pounds in 3 months but I wanted to lose 25."
"How can I change my legs? My right leg is 1/2 inch bigger than my left leg."
"I had a elk sandwich yesterday. Can I still lose weight?"
"I had creme brulee Sunday night and I lost weight the next day. How is that possible? Should I eat more creme brulee?"
"I started MFP when I was 59, but now that I'm 60 the weight is coming off slower. Is there any hope?"
"I've been doing this for 15 months and am tired of it. How can I reach my final goal in the next 3 months?"

LOL. Have a good day everyone.

Well said :) congratulations on your awesome success despite life happening :). I needed this thread today. I have been losing weight very very slowly ,though inches are coming off faster. I was wondering if I was doing it right at all. Your post made me realize that patience is all I need. Thank you for posting your story. You have motivated and inspired me to keep going on. :)

Yes please keep going. You've worked too hard to stop now. I lost more wright in the first 6 months and more inches in the next 6 months. Def not equal rates of loss.

Hi Congrats well done? :) cheers :)

What tips and encouragement would you share with those who don't have a trainer? And things to avoid doing during the journey to healthy weight?

Lots of people have success without a trainer. My trainer did not give me a meal plan, make food choices, or prepare my meals. That was all up to me. He reviewed my food log weekly at the outset and there are many good folks here on MFP who will look at your food log and give tips and suggestions. I would encourage you to seek this out, especially if you feel you are struggling in this area.

Work out regularly and I would encourage everyone to strength train. My gains in stamina and strength have been the key to keeping me motivated on the CICO side of things. I was really weak and in sad shape when I started and it has been a long slow, but successful, journey to achieve even a modest level of fitness. I started by walking 1 mile a few days a week, with lots of rest stops. Now I walk about 4 miles with no stops every day, including those when I workout with trainer or take class, including days when it is too hot, too cold, or too rainy or when I am too tired.

Set a plan, then DO IT. Make it a HABIT. Do not wait to feel motivated or inspired, Just keep working your plan and make adjustments as needed. REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED. This has been the most important thing for me. I felt miserable physically and mentally before I started. I felt hope for change within a few weeks. I know that if I don't keep moving forward -- whether that means proper eating, walking, exercise, or whatever -- I know that I'll go back to where I started. I don't want to go back there again. Ever. So I move, eat properly, or whatever is needed to keep moving forward.

Take progress pics and measurements. I was not thrilled when my trainer took the first pics and measurements, but I knew it was necessary. I am so glad he did, because they document a journey that I can hardly believe myself. They help keep you motivated, remind you of your progress, and help you believe that you're really doing this.

Finally, don't second-guess every ounce that you go up or down in weight. You WILL go up and you will go down. You will have good workouts as well as some frustrating ones. You will have great days and some bad days. Just record your results and move on, and make sure you are keeping with your plan.

I hope a few of these tips resonate with you and help you! Good luck!!
