Buying a Treadmill

I am thinking about investing in a treadmill. I think I would really like the luxury of just walking downstairs in the morning to get a quick run or walk in to start the day.

Anybody have any brand suggestions? Does it become a dust collector? :)

Always accepting friends, just add me!

Why don't you just continue outside and walk/run/jog? Enjoy the luxury of walking downstairs, out the door, greeting the day and getting your workout in.

Pondee629: I still plan to diversify my workout and get outside but, in the early mornings I am not comfortable running outside by myself and the drive to the gym is long for me.

I am looking for suggestions with people that have an at home treadmill or have a brand they like. Thanks for your input though.

I've had a True treadmill that has worked perfectly since I bought it in 2002. It's quiet and reliable. It was expensive but well worth it.

I have a Proform treadmill. It's 8 or 9 years old and still works well. I use it 4-5 times a week for anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes.

I have a Healthrider 95T that I got from Sports Authority about 6 years ago that I really like when I use it. I prefer to run outside of at the gym on their TMs but if I can't get to the gym (weather or whatever) it is a great option. My best advice is to test drive one before you buy....the length of the deck was a big deal for me because i wanted a comfortable stride.

Sorry, I didn't realize that your neighborhood was unsafe.

Not trying to discourage you from a treadmill, but have you considered a rowing machine?
    It's a complete cardio and 9 muscle group workout. It's a "2 birds with one stone" solution. /added :)

No idea where you are, but if UK then Decathlon are good value for the spec, that's where mine came from.

Hi I bought one over 10 years ago and totally love it I am on it nearly every day. Thinking of buying a newer model. One that can incline as mine as a manual incline not a motor one. Would definitely recommend it. If it's raining I just go and jump on it. I still go out walking but I can chill play loud music and not have to wrap up warm or trug through snow or rain. Just wish I didn't through out the manual as I just play with the buttons!!

I bought a PaceMaster Silver around 10 years ago and it has worked flawlessly. I don't use it as much as I used to as I run outside about 99% of the time now but my teenage kids still rack up the miles on it.

They're not cheap but they last. (and they're not made in China....)

Have you considered a Treadclimber? I have one and love it (though my husband hates it)!

I have a treadmill, a generic brand, but it has served me well for the past 3 years. I'm still not bored of it 3 years later! So whether or not it will become a dust collector depends on how much you enjoy working on a treadmill. In fact, just seeing this topic has made me want to go and spend a few minutes on my treadmill - that's another good thing by the way. If you're busy it's easy to divide your workout into 10 minute intervals scattered all throughout the day whenever you have a few minutes to spare without needing to drive to the gym or be out in hot or rainy weather or at night.

I've bought all of my gym equipment, bike, treadmill, elliptical, and weight set, on ebay. You can buy used, high (Gym) quality machines for less than poorly made new ones sold at large box stores.

I have a treadmill and a Concept 2 rower and I do go with the recommendation above about looking into a rower for your money. I would also agree with the post suggesting you buy high quality ex-gym second hand rather than brand new, you will get a better machine for your money and they should still last just as long.

Things to watch out for buying a treadmill:

    1. Width - most home treadmills are much narrower than gym equipment, make sure the width suits your running style.
    2. Length for your stride.
    3. Adjustable gradient, preferably electronic and adjustable by button.
    4. Top speed - some are not really up for sprinting.

I bought one, it can be a dust collector if you let it be. I use mine atleast two or three times a week whenever I dont feel like driving to the gym or when I only have a few minutes to get in a workout its great. Especially great if you experience all four seasons like me, you never know when that rain or snow will come down on your workout

@soldiergrl_101 Rain is no reason to hide inside, says someone that lives in one of the (usually) rainiest major cities in North America.

@zen_soul I've no input on specific brands or types of machines except to suggest you be sure about what it is you are seeking.

Is the primary objective the workout, meaning the type of exercise doesn't matter so much? Then a rowing machine might be a good well rounded solution. Or do you want a device that will allow you to refine an ability such as running? In that case a treadmill might be the better solution unless of course competitive rowing is in your future.

To each there own, I have anemia and hate the cold so when it rains or snows I either hit the gym to lift or hop on my treadmill @mwyvr

Absolutely, to each their own. You've no doubt tried it and made the decision for you.

For me, a treadmill is a device of absolute last resort. I want to be outside, day or night, sun or rain. Sometimes snow. Ice... no, I don't do ice.

Running in the rain isn't for everyone but many actually do like it once they try it and it's surprising how many haven't ever tried it. I'll take running in the rain to running in the heat any day.

I have had a Trotter since 1999, and it still works fine. I had heard that it was the longest lasting with the best repair record, so my local fitness store, which didn't carry it, ordered one just for me.

There have been times over the years when I have used it a lot, times guests enjoy it, and times it sits unused for months while I do other things. I love walking and biking outside, but there are just times that indoors is preferable. I can bundle up and deal with the cold, but once snow falls and is on the ground for months, everything is a mess, with a mixture of salt, sand, slush at the warmest time of day, and ice. Yuck! The last couple of years, the gnats have been unbearable for a couple of months late spring/early summer, and there are times that I can't get out early morning, and then it's so hot later in the day, and the mosquitoes attack once the sun is going down. Those are great times for home fitness equipment. I have only the treadmill, but would like to add an elliptical machine.

I prefer walking briskly to running (my old ankles get sore when I run), so I spend more time on the treadmill. The downside is that it is unbearably boring unless you have good music or TV. I even find it hard to get through commercials when I have regular programming on. I like music such as the Beetles old red album. The tempo is key - I love classical music, but most of it doesn't motivate me for a fast walk, esp. when the music slows. Streaming from Netflix or using DVDs keeps me going, since there are no commercial interruptions.

I even use the treadmill for my dog, since he is small enough that the length is adequate for his stride. (There is plenty of information on the Internet from dog rehab specialists on how to do this correctly and safely.)

We have had a Precor for about 11 years. Expensive, but hundreds and hundreds of miles on it. Both my husband and I use it five days a week.

I have one and to be honest, for the first 6 years that I had it, I hardly used it. But, now I use it 3-4 times a week. I love binge-watching TV series while I'm on it. I've never really been a big runner and the TV helps me get down to the treadmill and stay on it! Oh and this has been for the last three years, so it's possible to reverse a trend. ;-)

It'll become a dust collector, if you LET it become a dust collector! How motivated are you? I LOVE my treadmill..love love.....I can use it any time, day or nite, winter, rain....Our summer has been terribly hot and humid here, and I have pretty much hidden indoors for the last three months...but no worries, I got my runs in...I can watch shows, or crank the tunes....every day, my treadmill is sitting there, waiting for me to climb on and crush my goals! If you are the type to start something, then give up quickly, I wouldn't spend the money...but if you, like me, are totally motivated? GO FOR IT! Worth every dollar I spent :)

I bought a healthrider that has the ifit thingie on it. I mainly got it because of the width. It's the same as the ones we have at my gym. Horrendously expensive but I run on it every second day. I also watch tv shows while walking on it every night. I kind of figure that if I've got time to watch telly I may as well walk while watching lol
