hi everyone need some advice. This is my first time trying to lose weight so it's a new routine. I have always been fairly small. I had my first child seven years ago and quickly went down to pre-baby weight. I gained a tiny bit back before having my second and again quickly went back down to pre-baby weight. That was four years ago. The last year and a half I've just been eating whatever I want when I want, because that's what I've always been able to do. Well now I am 39 and that just doesn't work anymore. I put on 15 lbs. and it just didn't seem to be stopping.

Almost 4 weeks ago I went on a 1,200 cal diet. I did it for two weeks and lost about 5.5 pounds. However I felt like I was going to pass out most of the time. Some days I ate back the exercise calories but tried not to. One day I felt like I almost fainted and decided it wasn't healthy and I just couldn't sustain on that little. So now I am trying to eat about 1,400 cal average for the week (some days 1200, some days 1600) Ever since I bumped up the calories I am no longer losing weight. I weigh and log every single thing that goes into my mouth. I exercise 3 to 5 times a week. Intense uphill hikes for an hour and a half or an hour or two of tennis. I drink lots of water.

I feel completely fulfilled on the 1400 cal and I don't feel like I need anymore during this weight loss period. Is it pretty typical to plateau some weeks? I am a stay at home mom, started out at 137, I am aiming to get down to 120 but will be happy with 125, I am 5'5".

How long has it been since you change your calories? It might take a few weeks. Weight loss isn't always linear. You lost quite fast for your stats in those couple weeks on 1200. Perhaps you might just need to be patient.

I used to eat 1200 calories a day it was okay for awhile until my workout became very intense. I knew I could no longer eat 1200 calories a day, my nutrition bumped my calories to 1450 calories a day with low carbs Give it some time for your body to adjust to 1400 calories and on your days that you do not workout I suggest eat 1300 calories a day.
    Good Luck

Thank you. It has been a little over a week since I changed. I will try to be patient. I was just worried that I was doing something wrong since the weight was steadily coming off before.

I think you need to input your details in to an online TDEE calculator or MFP and work out your actual calorie intake. It seems at the moment you have been guessing - you probably aren't far off but remember, your calorie intake does depend on a few factors (exercise level being one)! :]

A plateau is 8 weeks, you are at a stall, which is totally normal. You don't have much to lose, so keep doing what you're doing and have patience.

I have entered everything in on multiple calculators. At first I was going for a pound and a half of weight-loss a week which would have been 1200 cal. I backed way off and and I am now shooting for a half a pound a week. This would give me up to 1500 cal and I'm eating 1200 some days, 1600 a couple days, for an average of 1400 a day a week. I am trying a zigzag diet. The days I'm not technically exercising I'm still moving around quite a bit. I don't have a desk job, I stay home with my kids so I am moving all the time, my phone just doesn't register it because I'm not carrying that around. On top of the intense exercise I do Pilates a few times a week that I don't input. I will keep pushing ahead.
