hi all
Wonder if you can help I've just been diagnosed after 9months of suffering and I've got to reverse it as the acid is effecting my voice and I sing in a band
I don't really understand the macros I've been told to cut a load of food out and go for a low fat diet, mum said Check the labels and pick stuff that's 5% fat and under so does that mean my macro should be 5%? (Sorry if it's a really dumb question)
Thank you x

I'd suggest asking your doctor about this. 5% is really low, but perhaps that is needed for you. Tell your doctor that you are tracking your macros and ask for suggestions.0

No low fat diet is good. Dietary fat is crucial for a variety of health functions. And no diet can cure your acid reflux.
I would avoid spicy foods, hot sauces, and overdoing acidic foods and alcohol... but that's not really a diet per se. Those are just foods that can trigger acid reflux symptoms, as well as the sinus blockage, inflammation, and terrible coughing that usually comes with it.
Macros
Protein: 0.60-0.80 grams per pound of bodyweight -- the highest amount justified by research for active individuals.
Dietary Fat: 0.40-0.45 grams per pound of bodyweight -- the lowest amount implied by clinical observation (unless obese). Okay to get more as long as you are staying within your calorie goal.
Remaining caloric budget: whatever mix of macronutrients you prefer, notably a rich variety of nutritious whole foods, fruits, veggies, high fiber items, and healthy fats.

Seconded, 5% is extremely low. At that level you'll start to see hormonal issues arise because dietary fat aids in the production of hormones. You could start seeing irregular periods, or even lose your period all together, so it does get dangerous at a certain point. I'd definitely talk to a doctor and/or and registered dietitian about your specific issue.0 -
I deal with acid reflux. High fat meals do a number on me. That doesn't mean that I eat a low fat diet. I try to get fat with every meal and every snack....I try to spread it out more evenly. I'm not sure if this would work for you.0

Thanks guys it's only for 6 weeks to give my throat time to recover and then I think I have to add stuff back in0

No you need a low acid diet.like nothing to create more acid like tomato, onion, bell peppers, spices, coffee, chocolate carbonated beverages, anything with added vitamin c as a preservative0

Fat is digested in the small intestine, not the stomach ... I'm not sure if the doctor knows what he's talking about. Whenever I had problems with acid reflux it was because I both ate too much and weighed too much. It completely went away on a low-carb diet, but lately I have been eating less (no huge meals anymore) and it completely went away as well. Not sure this applies to you ... you may have a specific issue causing the reflux.0

My mom sent me a fax from her doc that was similar to what you describe. Get a specific list from your doc. When Mom came to visit she was eating low fat yogurt, nuts, fruits, and a very small amount of crackers.
( Mom is very thin. Her reflux was caused by a side effect from a medication that an idiot doctor put her on. She went off the med but still had the reflux for a long time.)
Are you on medication that has reflux as a side effect?0 -

Double check w/ doc re the 5% and other details. Depending on specifics from the doc's office, that would mean stuff like low fat wheat thins, egg whites, beans, chicken breast, no fat yogurt, rice, low fat cheese.
Probably a good number of fruits and veggies (but not all) would be ok.0 -

But she is a little anorexic so she put her own "spin" on it to make her diet even more restrictive.
