Help. I've just fallen off the wagon because of my week long busy, DC touring vacation. I'm sure it was possible to have kept track but I didn't. I'd love advice on
1- how to eat well around family, travel, and/or the ever terrifying party with unpredicatably good things everywhere. I get the 'splurge every once in a while idea', but we're talking at least 3 big get togethers a week. Sigh.
2- A little detoxish plan for getting back on the wagon-- like good cleansing foods, tricks to drinking more water, workouts that can be done easily anywhere or with kids---
3- The courage to bring along mfp on another vacation.
4- I very well could have gained back the entire 10pounds I lost. Should I face the scale soon or wait?
As I'm writing this my husband is saying, "AH yes, your mom left mint chocolate icecream for us." I'm mentally cussing.

I'll be watching for advice on this also as I'm going on vacation in July with my family, including two teenage boys who can eat whatever they want and burn it off without breaking a sweat.0

Ok, on #1, just be honest with family and tell them you are working on eating better for your health. Being up front will let them know you are not being rude when you turn down desserts or portions of unhealthy foods. If you all are going to a restaurant see if you can view the menu online first and choose before you get there. If you can't, choose a salad with grilled chicken or salmon, or maybe a dish with chicken or salmon and a lot of veggies. You can also fake a food allergy in a restaurant to get dishes cooked healthier. Think "I am allergic to milk, so I can't have butter, blah blah."
#2, I don't know about the cleansing stuff, Google it. As far as drinking your water. I find that I drink more water when it has ice and a straw in it. I got one of those nice insulated cups that comes with a straw, I pack it with ice and fill it up everywhere. If you're not a water lover, try adding something to it, like a squeeze of fresh lemon or orange slices. You can also put strawberries in water or other fruit to flavor it.
#3, by bring along MFP do you mean the phone app? I did it within my first 2 months of being on here. It helped having the app because I could log wherever I was
#4, give yourself a day to redeem yourself tomorrow, drink a lot of water because you likely had a lot of sodium over the weekend which will probably have you holding some water weight...and stay under your calorie goal with a good workout if you can get one in!
And...you can say no to the ice cream You can do this!0 -
Oh Lord, how to keep track at get-togethers where you have NO control over what is put out and it all looks so good!
I will be watching for ideas to but all I can say is whatever you put on your plate, eat half and 'save' the rest (but then toss it out when you get home!) Do NOT go back for seconds!! Have plenty of salad and carrots / raw veggies people put out for the dips - but dont add the dips or dressings.
Avoid anything that looks too bad - laden with fat or cheese or cream or butter....
A water bottle is great to keep filling up and swilling down.
Workouts with kids - walking, playing, trampoline, swimming at beach?
I am a bit of a scale addict - I'd say face what you did and get on the scale - it may shock you into not doing that again. But if you are a tad squeamish you might want to wait. But I would get right on and see just how badly the choices I made affected me. Hopefully its not as bad as you fear!0 -
grrr...missed the workouts part...pack your running/walking shoes, this can be done...anywhere...are your kids big enough for a hike? bring resistance bands, you can find lots of good routines for them and you can literally do them anywhere!
One more thing...at gatherings, just take teeny portions of everything you want to try. If there's something you really like, have seconds of that and only that. Take a look at my diary. I went to a party today...didn't eat the greatest things, but I stayed under!0 -
THANK YOU!!! I love these posts! So helpful. I'm here giggling about the 'fake allergy idea'- i'm totally doing that more. I'm basically soaking in all these suggestions- as far as I'm concerned they're brilliant! Keep them coming when you have them!0

LOL! RIght as I start heading for my water bottle my hubby  is shoving a straw to this freshly made icecream shake in my face saying, "its the last day of vacation". I'm laughing and screaming "AH! NO! I can't, my friends say I can't!" . I didin't give in. Normally I'd be feeling all waaaaaambulance for myself  , but I am really liking the person who said I could do it. Cause I did.0

Wait to weigh yourself! If you've been eating a lot of salt, you're gonna get inaccurate results. Keep drinking a lot of water (use a big water bottle and challenge yourself to finish a certain number of bottles of day), and then weigh yourself in a few days. On vacations, I wouldn't be so strict on your exercise and calories, but try to exercise as much as you can - take stairs, walk to sight-seeing sights, walk around town instead of driving.
Indulge in what you truly love. For example, if you love ice cream and it's your favorite dessert ever, skip the cake and pastries you see, and have an ice cream cone when you get the chance and it will be worth it!0
