Food for energy?

What food should I be eating to give me energy so that I don't turn to coffee or sugary foods? I'm trying to change my diet to a healthy one that I can sustain and would love to give up caffiene. I'd love some ideas of foods I can take to work or energy high breakfasts.

Protein. It will give you energy and sustain you longer.0

calories are a unit of energy...so make sure you're eating enough calories.0

People vary, so tracking will help you see when you are more likely to do that.
For me, it makes a difference to get protein in the morning and generally to eat balanced meals -- a mix of carbs, fat, and protein, not the mostly carb breakfast that some seem to like. It also helps to have foods with fiber (fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains). It's more about not bouncing up and down which is something I had an issue with before I started this, as I was in part using quick carbs to make up for inadequate sleep. (I've found that now that I'm more active and have lost the excess weight that food choice seems to matter less, but people vary in how much it affects them.)0 -
When we have to work outside all day on the weekends and I know I'll miss lunch my go to breakfasts for sustained energy are:
Buckwheat flax pancakes with peanut butter and maple syrup
or
Wholemeal toast with butter, jelly and 2 eggs
I can work till dark on that. Then I have my big meal.0 -
In the afternoon I need a protein shake to keep me going. I like to think that is better than caffeine.0

If I eat in the morning (I usually skip because it sets me up to be hungry all day) balanced breakfasts work for me, too. If I'm having trouble getting going, I'll make sure to have a little simple carb, some complex carb, and proteins and fats.
Easy example:
Oatmeal
maple syrup
couple of eggs0 -

Work out. Both cardio and strength training.0
