So I just started to really run two days ago. I have never ran before and got to week 6 of c25k before I had to take a break from it bc of my calf. A couple of days ago I got my hrm and have been using it well I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill for 20mins or so and I could not stay in my zone I was always over. That only happened twice since I ran 2times so far but noticed it.Im not going that fast(4.8mph) and its not over by much (only 11bpm) and I don't feel terrible like im going to pass out or anything but is this going to mess up the calories I burn and is it going to get better once I continue to run? I don't want to have to slow down any bc at that pace I feel like I can run longer and it makes me feel great being able to do that.

without a doubt it will get better. i wouldn't freak out too much about your HR and i would pay more attention to your breathing and whether or not you can talk. if you can't talk, you are running too fast. your body will become more accustomed to running the more you do. congrats on starting out, running has been one of my joys since i started about 2 years ago. :)

Your heart rate will slow down after a period of training. How long that takes is variable depending on your genetics and how much you train. In my experience, when you are first starting out running it is better to run by feel rather than heartrate as it is nearly impossible to keep the heartrate slow without walking.

So, run at a pace that is comfortable and keep track of the heartrate to note how much it decreases over time at the same effort level.

After a while, once you begin developing aerobic conditioning, you will be in a much better position to run by heartrate rather than simply feel.

I agree my hr is always up at around 165 when i run, but i'm not breathless or over exerting myself, I guess its just the way my body reacts to exercise!
It doesn't really matter which more of cardio i take either, i'm always around 155-170 depending on the intervals i'm doing!

If you feel ok, keep going!
Well done on running as well! It's really good for your body and soul!!

Glad to hear I'm not alone. Running really does that to me too... more than any other exercise that I've tried. I've never been very consistent with it, so I guess if we keep training it should get better. Good luck!

I think with running PRE is more important than staying in a zone. As you get more fit, your HR will get better, and so will your PRE. With running it's important to not push too hard if you are working on getting mileage in vs racing. Just keep it up and don't worry too much about your HR IMO, your body and brain will typically keep you from overdoing it too much.

thanks everyone. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something detrimental when I was over my zone. It really made me feel good to run that long and I just want to make it an addition to the elliptical that I do for some cardio. Right now Im not really doing it for speed or distance just proving myself I can run and adding it to my routine.
