HELP! I desperately want to lead a healthier life, but feel beyond overwhelmed by all the changes that I need to make. I am looking for suggestions at where to start? In the past I have jumped into diets with both feet with an 'all or nothing' attitude, but that enthusiasm quickly faded. I really want to make changes to my lifestyle that will stick. Thanks in advance.

Start. Small. Little changes go a long way for getting you to stick to them. Change too much at once and you will unable to sustain those changes. Expect the process to take a long time. You may get depressed about what appears to be lack of progress. Ask for help from your friends, online and off. Feel free to add me if you'd like. Good luck!

The best advice I was ever given was to buy a food scale.

^^This. A food scale will give you much better results than a people scale usually will.

Thank you! I have been making small changes. Recently, my husband has been I'll & in the hospital, so healthy choices are limited in the hospital cafeteria. I've been trying to eat a lot of salads & Subway. My greatest battle is staying away from Coke. :( I just keep trying to make better decisions every day.

I do have a food scale and plan on utilizing it once I am back home.

    Thank you for the advice.

I would recommend you keep a journal and take inventory of when and what you eat.
    then make small changes.

Hey..coke zero it up!!! And if that doesn't work what I like to do is pout a little coke zero in a glass then mix it with a can of coke and that usually makes it taste better :)

Like stated above, start small especially if you have had trouble in the past with jumping in and getting burned. You have to remember you did not gain the weight over night and you are not going to lose it that way either. You are going to see on here 100000000000 times calories in < calories out and that is correct but every person is different and the way one person cuts calories and loses weight may not work for another person, personally I did the counting calorie thing and didn't mind what I ate as long as I stayed within my calorie range, I lost about 30 pounds and got into a rut that I could not get out of so I have had to try something else. Wise to remember what works for one may not work for you and it may take some time to figure out what will work for you. So step one--you determine what your habits are that are causing you to gain weight (or stay overweight) then go from there. A journal for about a week where you are completely honest with yourself on what you have eaten (including calories) and how much activity you have done is a good start. Another step you can work on is increasing your support system here if you are planning on using this app, a good support system here can help keep you motivated!

Thank you for the support! My husband remains in the hospital, so I'm struggling with the food part. I went shopping and bought some Smart Ones, soup, and fruit to keep in my hotel room. I've not been diligent at tracking my intake bc I tend to fall into the 'all or nothing' mentality & figured since I can't dedicate 100% to this then I'd wait until I could. Well, after having a talk with my BFF (who recommended MFP) I've decided to try 'something is better than nothing' on for size. So, I've begun tracking my food today. Wish me luck.
