Calories Burned

I've been wondering how accurate exercise apps are at counting calories burned. I've been using the map my walk app for about a week now and it's saying I am burning about 1000 calories a day! All I do is walk my daughter to and from school. So that's just under 3km, 4 times a day (morning and afternoon, there and back). It just seems like a huge amount...

Well, calories burned walking, or for that matter, doing any exercise, will depend on a number of factors especially your current weight, so without knowing your weight, it is hard to say. You could try the calculator here http://www.mapmywalk.com/improve/calorie_calculator/ and compare that to the results MFP gives you when you enter your walking in your exercise diary (you will need to calculate your speed to find the right 'walking' entry. If you're walking slowly with your child, probably the walking dog entry.

Yeh, that calculator is still giving me around the same results. It just seems like a huge amount still MFP gave me a goal of 1700 calories a day so with burning 1000 I'll have to eat 2700! SERIOUSLY! I could eat fried chicken for all 3 meals and have calories left over.

What is your weight? That sounds very high.
MFP tells me 1km is approximately 50 cals for me, so 12km would be 600 cals, of which I'd eat back max 300 (using the 50% rule of thumb, MFP tends to overestimate).

I totally fall into the grossly overweight catagory, check it out:

To save you from converting 1851 kj is actually 440 calories, and don't forget I do this walk 4 times a day.

Thats nearly 7 miles a day so your walking really far and the more you weigh the more you will burn. Dont eat back all the calories but certainly eat around 50% of the back and see how you go.

Use a HRM to determine how many calories are burned.

I always suggest to eat back half, and monitor your rate of loss over the month. If you are losing faster than expected, up the percentage you eat back. If you're losing less, tighten up your logging. Use a food scale.

HRM are best for steady state cardio, walking would be iffy for accuracy.
