Any Suggestions? 19 year old struggling!

I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help me with my stalled weight loss.

I am a 19 year old- 5'3 weighing around 160. I have been working out and counting calories since January and I am still the exact same size that I was in January- actually a few pounds heavier. (only been on the site since March)

I consume between 1200 and 1300 calories a day and I eat only whole wheat grains and loads of fruit and dairy. I don't eat any meat.

I have been to a doctor numerous times and gotten my thyroid checked and been tested for diabetes and everything in the book and everything always comes back negative.

I'm just getting really down because of the fact that it feels like whatever I do, nothing changes. I run, do spinning, circuit training and yoga classes, work out on the stairstepper and the elliptical and nothing has changed in almost 6 months.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

Calories may be too low. I don't completely understand it but I think you should be eating more calories.Hopefully someone can explain it more clearly.

Maybe you are eating too little. 1200 to 1300 calories is a little too close to the bare minimum without exercise but you are exercising. Try eating 70 to 80 percent of your exercise calories back. Get a heart rate monitor so you know exactly what you are burning during exercise so you know how much to eat. Sounds like your metabolism just needs a boost.

I can't see your diary, but I don't eat meat and I'm on a 1200 calorie plan as well. And I don't have trouble getting the weight to come off. Perhaps you need some higher intensity workouts to shake things up? I can't really give too many suggestions without knowing much about what you're eating.

I agree, calorie may be too low, what did MFP recommend? Also, can't see your diary so hard to comment on what you are eating.

Are you eating back your exercise calories? If not and you exercise as you stated then for sure you are way too low. Never want to be under 1200 unless under Dr's orders.

hi..check your portions sizes....it might help to use a food scale or any type of measuring devises......are you drinking enough water...use the report tool....check the amounts of carbs, sugars, fats, sodium, etc., the report tool is very helpful....you're exercising, log the exercise time also....good luck, dont give up, you're learning a life skill, proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle...

Try staying away from carbs such as whole grains, wheat, fruits, etc. Limit your fruits to 3 or less a day. Try to stay under 100g of carbs a day. If your body is not using those carbs they get sent to fat. Eat more veggies and less fruits! Also watch what fruits you eat. I stick to the berry family since they are usually low in sugar and carbs and have a great deal of vitamins etc. Bananas are bad and are full of mostly glucose (bad stuff) instead of the fructose (ok-ish stuff). You can safely move your calorie intake to 1500 and cut your carbs and you should start losing weight. Staying away from carbs are difficult. I am a vegetarian so i know how hard it is. Your body will get its calories from; Fat, Protein and/or Carbs. Try to get more of your calories from Protein and Fat. I work out a lot and mostly all of my carbs come with vegetables and I try to keep my carbs around 100 or less.
  • Hello:

Hmmmmmmmmm thats a hard one. However my wieight loss was also stalled a couple of months ago and I seemed to have a bloated gut and someone suggested I cut down on dairy products and ..............I lost 10 pounds! I normailly eat about 1200 calories per day but I don't eat a lot of cards. I pretty much eat meat, nuts, fruits and veggies. I don't avoid carbs I just don't tend to eat of them. Good luck and don't get discouraged!

Thank you for the advice everyone! I really appreciated reading back through this and seeing what you are all suggesting as help.

To answer the question, MFP did actually recommend 1200 calories a day and that's where I got 1200 as a good number to be at.

I am certainly going to try out some of the things that a lot of you suggested and thanks again so much for the motivation and advice! :)
