I'm new to this burn calories thing, and while I do exercise once in a while, I want to be more effective and cut more. Any Tips appreciated!

500 calories @ 200 pounds is a 4 mile run.0

And a 4 mile run could take 40, 44, or 48 minutes at 10 / 11 / 12 minute miles. Plus pee breaks. And stretching afterward. Great cardio pulmonary benefit. From the running, not from the urination or stretching.0

vigorous lap swimming 35 minutes gets me 500+ caloric burn.0

Cycling 25 km.
Walking about 12.5 km.
Climbing stairs - up - for about 60 min.0 -
Thanks for the tips0

Running seems to burn the most for me, roller blading or biking are good as well.0

Before I could run, I was able to easily and effectively burn 500 calories in less than an hour on an elliptical or stationary bike with the right resistance settings and speed.0

Nine holes of golf, walking, pulling your clubs with a hand cart.0

Walk A LOT. I spend the entire day on my feet clocking over 16k in steps and it burns me an extra 1000+ cals a day.0

What do you like doing? Can you bike commute to work? Any adult sports leagues in your area?
I'm inclined to think you should focus on finding something that you enjoy doing and then the calorie burn is a bonus....0 -
Some of these posts are spot on. Others are...not.
There's no way that walking for 1.5 hours burns 500 calories. With an HRM yesterday, I logged a 550 burn for 32 minutes of jogging at a 9:17 pace and 14 minutes of walking at 3 miles/hour.
Gardening will not burn 500 calories in 1.33 hours unless said gardening includes lots of wheelbarrow trips, brush clearing, and/or heavy shoveling. Weeding your flowers just doesn't burn that much.0 -
Lots of walking is how i get there0

I've been walking 5 miles 5 times a week, but I would like to do something that takes less time with no props or machines.0

my question to you is why 500 calories specifically?0

Eat 500 less calories and watch the tele...0

Walking for 90 minutes at 3mph is probably closer to 300 calories than 500 unless you're a pretty big person. Picking up the pace will help that but most people still won't hit it. I walk at a 4mph pace and weigh 185, going by some of the estimates I've seen (Runner's World has a great article on their web site for this), I'm burning between 75-80 calories per mile. That's 450-480 for 90 minutes and I'm pretty sweaty and my heart rate is up at the end.0

Rowing on water, rowing machine (but learn how to do it correctly), cross-country skiing if you live in the right spot. At 200lbs, per the MFP database (which is high IME), that's 508 calories for 48 minutes at moderate effort for both forms of rowing, 42 minutes for moderate XC skiing.0

Your brain burns 250 to 300 calories a day you as a human burn over 1500 calories a day just to stay alive two less beers a day is 500 calories a medium french fry is close to 500 calories you really don't need to workout if you need time just change the calories you ingest and minimum macro's in check
Check your TDEE and remove 15%-25% the weight will go down when the discipline kicks in. I ride a bike 50 min 20 miles min count it as 500 calories..0 -
I don't drink or smoke, and the reason why I used 500 as an arbitrary number is because I'm consuming around 1500 calories a day so if I burned a third of my intake I will reach my goal faster without feeling weak.0

The elliptical is the easiest for me. I burn 450 in about 40 minutes.0

Yet u choose a picture of a beer in your pic allotment?? If your serious and have some discipline use TDEE raise your protein to .8 and fat to .4 grams per body lb of what you want to weigh (165)for 3 months then what you will weigh after 3 months if you can prove it by logging and posting pics of your loss I'll help you finish your goal 100%0

I walk for a few hours a day, but that only burns about 700 calories. I would recommend getting a pedometer and try to increase your activity in general. If you can spread your steps over the day, you will still burn 500+ calories, but you won't have to set aside a 2 hour block like I do. It would be easier to get off an earlier bus stop, park further away, and have 3 thirty minute walks during the day (1 when you get up, 1 during your lunch hour and 1 after your evening meal). I wish I could do that, but the roads near my house aren't safe. I have to drive for a few minutes to get somewhere that I can actually walk my dog.0

Gee, you make it sound like that's a bad thing. Beer is good food! Just don't take a look at the weight loss tracker on my profile.
OP, I don't know what you weigh, but I'm 220 lbs and burn about 185 calories per mile running at an 11 minute pace. Scale that by a ratio of your weight to my weight to see what you'd lose per mile.

I walk 15000-25000 steps a day & burn 500+ calories for my efforts. Some of it just happens in my normal day as a sub doing PE with the kids, walking around campus, parking far far away @ Costco, etc and the remainder comes from fast paced distance walks & hikes.0

OP, with 30 lbs to lose, set your goal to 1 lb per week, eat all your calories, and workout with the goal of preserving your muscle. I am a 5'4" 130 lb woman, and I eat 1500 cals net to lose weight. A grown man netting 1,000 per day is going to lose alot of muscle along with lost fat.0
