Fractured toe and Exercise

Hi all,

Last night I fractured my pinky toe, my doctor has me wearing a supportive surgical shoe to keep it from flexing while it heals. It's kind of like a bulky open toed sandal.

She said I could walk around in it. Do you think it's okay to do my long walks, only maybe slower for right now while it heals? It's hard to walk fast in it anyway. Or should I do a different kind of cardio for now?

I can do my upper body weights at the gym but I might change into my closed toe sneakers while I'm there for safety reasons. The only think I'm unsure about is lower body weight exercises right now.

Is there any way you can do a rowing machine, or stationary bike for a few weeks?
I am always over protective of injuries, so would be cautious of over- flexing your foot.
Also your gait will have to compensate for your toe, that could be counterproductive in the long term.

    Cheers, h.

Seems like a question for the doctor.

Sorry to hear about your toe :(

I'd ask the doctor for a referral to a physical therapist and ask that person. Also listen to your body.

Sorry to hear about your injury!

If it were me, I'd try and find exercises that didn't put too much strain on that particular area. I would suggest rowing as mentioned above - but it's totally dependent on how you are feeling. The important thing is, not to cause more damage to your toe so generally I'd recommend taking it easy and resting up for a little while!

Not a broke toe but I have bruised the ball of my foot pretty bad. I am laying off the cardio until it heals a bit and instead going to do some lifting to keep things moving the way I want. Might want to just lift a bit and do things that are not going to put stress on that part of the foot

I fractured my second to last toe a few summers ago. The doctor's excuse became my first weekend off in months, and I wasn't about to waste it. I tied up some Converse shoes really tight and went to a big festival that I was on my feet for 8+ hours. I was fine and the shoes were actually more comfy than the boot in preventing toes from moving.

Moral of the story, not a medical opinion, but I think you will be okay. If anything, cut the walk back a bit in addition to moving slower.

There are seated exercise videos on youtube. You could try some of those so you are not putting weight on your foot.

I used the seated videos for 4 weeks when I sprained my ankle. Sparks does good and using weights and resistance bands are good too. Just look up cardio seated video. strength seated even yoga for flex and stretch.

Check with your doc before removing your adaptive shoe during exercise. This might be the time you need stabalization the most!

Talk to your doctor. I fractured my middle toe on a family vacation this year and simply taped it to the one next to it and ... kept on with my regular walking program. With your injury being slightly different, your doctor might want you to do something different.
