does sugar make you feel depressed?

So I was away for a week on holidays prior to this my diet was near enough perfect apart from the few slip ups here and there. When I was away I basically ate some form of chocolate with breakfast lunch and dinner. The whole week I literally ate all the junk food I could. It made me feel like proper crap and super drained whilst on holiday + made me just crave more :S

Since I've been back my first day of back to eating properly is going well, however I just feel really emotional, moody and angry. I keep crying over little things and In a really depressed state.

Does sugary foods make anyone else feel like this? Why does this happen? How long does it take the for the effects to subside?

    I feel moody and tired after cutting back on sugar. I think the body is adjusting to the lack of glucose fuel.

    Overall, my moods are MUCH more stable and I am more energetic when I avoid sugars. Just my n=1.

    No, eating sugar or not eating sugar doesn't make me cry or get depressed.

    Yep. And anxious. However, my keto diet and exercise can make me restless and anxious, too. Because now I have more energy that has to be used for something, and I do not suffer boredom gladly. I have to find things to do when I have energy. When I don't I can zone out, play a video game, whatever. Now I have to get moving or doing something interesting. That's a downside I never really thought about before.

    Also, keep in mind, it wasn't just sugar in those foods, it was probably high amounts of fat. One thing I will point out, if you go from eating a lot of nutrient dense foods to eating a lot of foods without many nutrients, that is what is probably having the effect.. not so much the sugar.

    If you are depressed and/or crying, there might be a bigger issue at hand. Any history of an ED, anxiety, etc...

    No, in fact, carbs can trigger the release of serotonin, which is what some anti-depressants do. My guess is that you are having an emotional response to the perceived failure at eating sugar over your holidays or you are inducing the mental stress by telling yourself you were "bad" and now you have to be "good" and not have any sugar.

    Which is probably why a day of sugary foods leaves me happy, but after that, diminishing returns, and after that misery. Doesn't release of serotonin from an outside source eventually = tolerance, therefore the need for more to get the same effect?

    I'm not sure a week of eating sugar would lead to a new threshold of required levels for not feeling depressed.

    I have never suffered a negative effect from eating food containing (added) sugars.

    Eating too much sugar or junk in general makes me feel depressed, but more because "oh why did I do that to myself, I have no self-control, I will always struggle with this..."

    I eat loads of carbs and sugar every day. It doesn't make me sad or depressed.

    For a normal person, sure, but I've been off and on massive amounts of sugar all my life, so perhaps my brain is nowhere near normal.

    Same thing happened when I was off sugar (happens I was also gluten free) vegan and then downed a bunch of sugary junk.

    of course it can. food is the number one source of emotional problems and illness - if we adjusted our diets to address emotional.physical problems and illness - there would be a sudden drop in the PHARMACUTICAL INDUSTRIES/MEDICAL INDUSTRIES/JUNK FOOD INDUSTRIES PROFIT MARGIN.

    Sugar doesn't make me depressed. My genetics do that.

    Generally, a hot brownie covered in thick hot fudge and vanilla ice cream makes me extremely happy. Until it's gone. But I think that's more the generous amounts of chocolate more than the sugar.

    Sugar itself has no affect on me. Copious amounts of caffeine will make me clean my house really well, really fast but sugar, I get no energy surge or crash from, or emotional value either way.

    This is also the start of the season SAD. Are you getting less sunlight than when you were on vacation?

    I always feel sort of in the dumps after getting back from vacation. It has nothing to do with my food, I just enjoy vacation and hate going back to work (and I love my job!).
