Perhaps the idea of the monetary penalty reinforces peoples' natural fear of trying something new or committing? We have a Weight Loss Challenge where I work probably a couple of times a year and it's a "friendly" competition between the three floors of employees. I'm not sure what, if any, prizes they have going this time around, but we have a Committee who decides that. It's never been much in the past. The funny thing is that I work at a health insurance company and you would not BELIEVE how many folks around here NEED to be participating.......

Oh I believe you....Im just amazed that not even one person seems interested, as far as money, there always selling things (food, candles, fund raiser for kids & grandkids), participating in group lotteries, buying birthday gifts for each other etc.....Im sure $10 is nothing and only one person can win, no one will know what they weigh or how much they lost!! Someone bought a cake in yesterday and doughnuts today everyday is something crazy!!!

Thanks It did take a lil chunk out of my morning, but my Boss Sharon G. the one who was going to monitor the weigh ins thought it was a good idea and a great way to keep moral in the office....there's only 3 men and all the rest are women and most of us are overweight!

$10 ???? they spend money on everything else around here including random potlucks.
  • It could be that your coworkers are intimidated with your loss and feel they can't do as well as you have! 125lbs is alot of weight! I would be! Just saying

That stinks, and it probably makes you feel a little awkward around the office now. At least I would feel awkward. Seems like overall, many are only motivated to lose weight on Jan. 1. I can guarantee that if you'd sent it around on Jan. 2, you'd have money falling out of the pot right now.

Do you get along pretty well with people in your office?

And I agree, $10 towards this is not a big deal if they are already spending it on other things regularly.

I also wonder if so many people make it their goal to lose weight by summer, and now that summer is here, they are thinking, "screw it....... ain't gonna happen" and don't have any drive.

If I was there, I'd do it. I have always wanted a (real life) weight loss partner that will stick it out with me from start to finish. Everyone along the way has disappeared eventually at some point.

    At least you tried!

Yeah, it does seem odd that no one wants to participate. We had a similar program at our work, and I joined as well as almost 30 other people. The prize was 3 month membership to the gym across the street, plus PT sessions, and some money.

Either way, $10 is not a lot when it comes to your health. Some people are just intimidated and don't want to share their weight loss with others, especially if they don't think they can do it. Attaching a prize to the winner may help get more people involved...just make sure its not a box of donuts..jk :)
