Macros work with nutrition and satiety, not weight loss. If you eat fewer calories than you burn in a day, you will lose weight.
Nutrition and satiety are important to a lot of people so after you get used to calorie counting you can tweak your macros.
I make sure I get my protein minimums daily.0 -

This.
The first step is to figure out how to log your calories correctly. Keep an eye on your macros. Soon you'll get good at finding ways to meet them and what foods work for your diet best.0 -
Yes, I started with calories! Then, when that was working I watched sugars. Now I have a protein goal too. I kind of just let carbs & fats fight it out from day to day as long as I stay within my calorie allowance. I'm sure with time I'll develop an opinion about those too!0

+1
For me I know that I need to hit my increased fiber (which falls under carbs in terms of macros) so I focused on that one first since it is something that I was instructed to do by multiple medical professionals. After that I work on protein because I realized that was my lowest one consistently. Greek yogurt, cheerios, and Quest bars are good friends of mine for hitting those two things.
