What do you listen to while exercising?

Hi!

If you exercise on your own and not using a video, what do you like to listen to?

I have an elliptical trainer and I used to make music playlists, but for some reason it felt like the same 10 songs played over and over again. Or I would decide I didn't like most of the songs anymore.

These days, I listen to the Welcome to Night Vale podcast. It works great for me because the episodes are between 25 and 30 minutes, which is pretty much perfect, and it allows me to focus on the story, and not so much on the workout itself (that usually means staring at the clock and wishing it would go faster :D )

I still have a lot of episodes to go before I'm caught up, but that day will come, and sooner than I want it to. Then I'll have to wait for the twice-monthly episodes, and find another "story" podcast to listen to in the meantime.

So, what do you guys like to listen to?

I'm too lazy to make playlists so I mostly just listen to full albums. Bands currently in rotation:

Amon Amarth, Goatwhore, Cattle Decapitation, High on Fire, APMD, NAILS, Pig Destroyer, Lamb of God, Aborted, NIV, Hatebreed, Crowbar, Protest the Hero

This is while lifting. Any cardio I do is mostly walking, where I might listen to some music, or cycling outside where its just me and the open air.

Hahaha, I don't think I've heard of a single one of those bands :D

I think if I were walking by myself I'd listen to music again, but on the elliptical trainer it didn't work because I ended up trying to match the pace of the song, going faster than I intended and then my heart would start racing...

Depends on my mood and what I'm doing. I like Pandora, I have several playlists on my phone that I tap into. I also like podcasts and audiobooks, especially when I'm on the treadmill.

Lately, I've been listening to Pandora playlists based on this guy but also these dudes too.

Sometimes I just put on Bloomberg TV, or play episodes of "Intervention," or "My 600-lb Life."

    I'm weird that way.

I've been rocking the Spotify playlists rather than making my own.

@ovidnine - I once fell asleep at a Pig Destroyer show. I consider that one of my life's greatest mysteries.

I mostly exercise in silence. But when I listen to music, I mostly listen to Pandora or music on my phone. Over the weekend I found a mix tape from back when I was in college (mid-90s) so I listened to that yesterday. That was a mix of Hootie and the Blowfish, Weezer, 10000 Maniacs, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, and Barry White. It made me miss the Columbia House music club.

I can't listen to a podcast while lifting or I'll get sidetracked. If I'm out taking a walk, I'll listen to podcasts though. The Tobolowsky Files is a good one.

Unless you like hardcore and death metal I'm not surprised lol!

    @ovidnine cracking playlist.

My lifting tracks vary between metal and soundtrack/classical depending on my mood.

For steady cardio (running etc) I tend to lean towards trance/happy hardcore/techno etc. Although in conjunction with the TrailMix app on my iPhone I can set the BPM of any tracks to suit my cadence.

Usually it's the sound of my trainer yelling at me...I mean giving me directions, but when I'm alone I only listen to music on the stationary equipment. I like pandora, I have a wide variety of different types of music that I listen to. Anything from meek mill to beyoncé to nsync to chris brown. Whatever I'm feeling that day.

Pandora (80s cardio radio is my latest go-to) if I'm feeling too lazy to make my own playlist but, lately, I've been all about making my own playlists on Amazon Prime music. But, I also listen to audio books when I drive, so sometimes I'll pull out the audio book while doing cardio, if I'm at a particularly good part!

    I run. Outdoors.

I listen to my footfalls. It's a rare day I have headphones on, partly due to safety concerns but mostly because being cut off from my foot strikes messes up cadence. I can hear when I'm running the right cadence.

Running outdoors provides plenty of mental stimulation and I never get bored. If I was running inside I'd be wired seven ways to Sunday... and still be bored.

I watch Netflix on my iPad when I'm on the Treadmill. It passes the time much faster than music. If I'm outside, I listen to whatever iTunes radio station strikes my fancy that day.

You could also try audio books.

I listen to top 40/hip hop/EDM at the gym. If i'm cycling outside I don't listen to anything, too dangerous.

Sometimes I listen to podcasts - This American Life and Radio Lab, but I find I push myself harder when listening to music.

When I started running I would create playlists but after a month I quit. Now I just listen to the voices inside my head.

Like five finger death punch too to run to. Seems to make me post faster miles! Listen to whatever takes my fancy but have a goto cardio playlist that gets me pumped.

Have you tried 99% Invisible, Age of Persuasion, or Criminal? They're all great podcasts. I'm also finding some great workout playlists on Apple Music. Right now I'm running and lifting to Seven Nation Army: An Alt-Rock Workout as well as Money, Pizza, Respect (hip-hop). I totally hear you on repetitive playlists! Who has time to build them anymore?! A girl's gotta have a social life and get some work done!

If I'm running, I prefer music but I'm too lazy to keep adding to my playlists...so, it does get repetitive after awhile.
If I'm just walking or hiking in the woods, I usually like to listen to the birds or just the sounds/silence of nature but if I need something to listen to, I like listening to podcasts (How Did This Get Made?, Talking Movies and Stuff You Should Know are my biggies).

Netflix. At the moment I'm working my way through Merlin and House.

I love Welcome to Night Vale! Also, I used to use the Zombies Run app. Good fun

If I go too heavy on leg press then I listen to the bones in my knee grinding together. :)

Ministry of Sound Dance Anthems is current music choice for a high tempo training session on a bike.

Trance and electro are best for me while HIIT... running, sprints mostly. Make me feel like out of space! And metal and rock and screaming and shouting while lifting.

Trance, psytrance, dubstep, anything that isn't lyric heavy and has over 140bpm. When I'm lifting I need energy, and hearing some guy scream about nonsense doesn't help...just give me a beat, and I'm good to go.
