Compulsive Overeating

I'm sure there are other compulsive or emotional eaters out there. I've lacked motivation lately and it's starting to show! I'm slowly gaining my weight back. What do you guys do when you get the urge to just eat EVERYTHING, especially when you're upset? I just can't seem to get back on track.

I take each day as it comes, we all have slips but you just have to try and get back on that road and keep on trying, i tend to eat in the evenings so have started going to bed earlier to resist temptation, not an ideal solution as some days i do slip but just keep on trying, drink water or find some low cal snacks you like and give them a go, sorry im not much help xx0

I was so bad this past week, and I started feeling MISERABLE and I got all kinds of cranky after a couple days of falling back into that slump, especially while I was at my parents house for the weekend. I came back home, took a day to regroup, and today I'm back on the path, hoping to make up for how bad I was. The biggest thing for me was that I realized I was falling back in that slump and I didn't want it.0

i struggle with that Daily. I try to walk away. I'll go out side and walk or go to the gym. But sometimes I end up giving in and munching on everything in site. THen i hit the gym the next day adn work out extra hard.
Sitting and knitting, keeps me Distracted, But if it happens at work,. I pity the person who might order fries cuz they might only get a half order,. Okay Joking0 -
I don't know where you are in your relationship with Christ, so please don't be offended. However if you are a follower of Christ, read the book MADE TO CRAVE by Lysa TERKEURST .
My girlfriends and I are reading it as a team and we are doing so much better with the compulsive eating.

Well, some of the latest thinking about this problem is that we are all going to do this to some degree or another. It's hard-wired in human beings. BUT:
You can cheat the "system." The first step is to not bring calorie-dense but nutrient-poor foods into your house in the first place. You have to start somewhere, so pick the least healthy thing you often turn to and replace it with something healthy. My example would be ice cream. I love it. But what I realized is that I mostly like the texture and creaminess...so I've replaced it with Greek yogurt. At first I used 2% Greek with fruit. Over time I went to fat free and then just vanilla and finally now I just eat plain fat-free Greek yogurt. When I want it to be more like pudding, I will mix in a scoop or two of chocolate whey and a tablespoon or two of cocoa powder. It gets thick like pudding, and that hits the same spot in my brain as ice cream.
The trick - and it *is* a trick you are playing on yourself - is to only pick ONE thing. Get that ONE thing under control, make it a habit to choose the healthier option (takes a minimum of 30 days to form a habit) and ONLY then should you try to make another major change. One step at a time, use each success to build up for the next step.

My past TWO WEEKS were like that! UGH! I am finishing up a very difficult and demanding class for grad school and have completely tried to eat my stress away. I seriously downed an entire bag of Lays Cheddar and Sour Cream Potato Chips in one sitting...and I'm not talking about a small bag either. Thankfully I snapped out of it a few days ago (when I had trouble zipping a pair of shorts that should fit) and am back on track. Just remember why you are on this site and keep you personal goals in mind. Sometimes it helps me to keep a daily journal (not a food journal). That way I can track what is going on in my life when those eating binges occur and try to avoid those situations in the future. If the situations are unavoidable, I have also found that going for a long walk or run when I get the urge to emotionally eat also helps me stay strong. Most of the time the cravings go away once I exercise. I am hoping that my instict to compulsively overeat whenever I get stressed will be replaced with a desire to work out instead. I feel your pain, but know you can overcome this. Each day you get a new start0

It seems what helps me best is too have a portion of protein with each meal and make sure I have a planned day in my diary first thing in the morning.
Also I have to have snacks. I snack about 3 times a day besides meals.
don't know if that helps but I am rooting for you to get your edge back.
You can do it!:flowerforyou:0 -
I am the same way. Eating is a mental thing for me not a hunger thing. Personally I started (by recommendation from my health Professor) eating 4-5 small meals a day. About every 3-4 hours. It honestly helped me. My brain still thinks about food but not obsessing about it to the point I want to eat the refrigerator!! I know I just ate an hour ago and I am full so it pushes away those thoughts. Everyone is different and not everyone agrees with this method but to each his own it works well for me I am down 14 lbs now. Good Luck in reaching your goals!!!0

Yes this is kinda of what I do. eat three meals and 2 snacks a day in between. And I also plan my meals in the morning or night before so I know what I am going to eat and hardly ever vary from it!0 -
Thank you all SO MUCH! I wrote down a list of all of your guys' suggestions and put it on my wall as a reminder. I've been off of the wagon for two or three weeks now, but I'm very dedicated to get back on track tomorrow. Thank you guys again for the support!0

Anything for a fellow Marylander and weight loss seeker. Thats what we are all here for, support!!! Good Luck!!0 -
For me, eating something crunchy helps. Air popped popcorn, baby carrots, homemade baked wheat pita chips.....
If that doesn't work, i chug some water, grab some gum and go on a walk to get away from the food!0
