Chia seeds?

Hello MFP!
I am curious about chia seeds. Do they aide with weight loss?
What, if any, are their benefits?
I have read a little on the internet about them but was wondering if anyone eats them and what they have gained from doing so?

Thanks in advance.

If you find that eating more fiber helps you meet your goals, chia seeds are a way to do that. The calories can add up quickly, so make sure you're logging them.

I put them in smoothies, breakfast oats, or salad dressings sometimes.

I eat them but I think the only benefit is that they have fiber and expand in your stomach to help you stay full. I use them in overnight oats or Greek yogurt.sw7dwovtm8cq.jpeg

Chia seeds are high in soluble fiber. Think of them as oatmeal on steroids. They have no magic properties to help us lose fat, and in fact you must measure carefully as they are calorie dense. I measure them with a tablespoon at most. I soak them first before eating as they absorb many times their weight in water (or milk)

Because of their fibre content, they may help keep you stay "regular".

Chia seeds add fiber, Omega-3, and some protein. I use them pretty much as the previous posters do. I never thought of them as a weight loss aid, more to round out the nutrition of the foods i add them to.

Awesome! I didn't think of them as a weight loss aide either. I just wanted to know if they were a good addition or not. I eat a tablespoon (measured) in the morning so I am not super hungry before lunch because I don't always have time to grab a quick snack and I eat them in the evening. So 2 tablespoons a day or less. Thank you guys for your information.

Awesome! I will look into it. I just like that I am not starving all morning when I don't have time to snack. The chia seeds help keep me not as hungry. They are expensive though.

I usually mix 1 tbsp of chia seeds with 1 cup of kefir (cultured milk). The protein in both the kefir and chia seeds helps fill me up as a snack. The probiotics in the kefir and the fiber in the chia seeds help me have phenomenal poops in the morning. Chia seeds area great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which we normally don't consume enough of in our diets, and they are more natural than taking fish oil pills.

Just be careful not to have kefir around the time when you have coffee. It'll upset your stomach.

I have tried a couple of versions of chia seed pudding yum! I usually use for smoothies with flax seeds as well. I do have a question on how you measure your chia seeds? I saw a couple of post where you use a tablespoon to measure. I hope I am not underestimating how much I am getting because I am measuring in grams using my scale. It looks like a lot of seeds (I also measure my flax seeds this way to)

Be sure to mix it BEFORE you add the maple syrup, or it is extremely hard to mix. Found that out the hard way.

They help you meet your fiber goals. They don't help with weight loss.

Agreed. Just to clarify, my daughter doesn't eat that chia seed pudding for weight loss, so I can't comment on the calorie count in it. She eats it for nutrition, and because when you're eating at 4:50 AM before a 2 hour intense workout, you want something that will sit well. :D

@Chasity6 I use my scale to measure my chia seeds. 15g which is roughly a TBS

I dont know how you guys eat it. Ive tried before and the texture is too gross for me, would take me soo long to finish a cup. Tried also the chia pods with different flavors with same results. I also didnt notice that it decreased my hunger.

I would like to try them but I find that just one bag is super duper expensive. So maybe not worth it for just extra fiber... Carbs and fiber are the macros I try to hit anyway.
