The only question I like to be asked relative to tacos is "Cerveza or Margarita"?

    Chicken.

There is a salt substitute if thats a issue. Leave out the salt and just add a sprinkle for taste when u make your own? Use celtic sea salt! So good for ya.

Tacos are one of my staple foods. High protein, lower calorie, extremely filling, and delicious. It's flavorful enough for me to use very lean beef and still taste great, unlike other foods where the leanest beef tastes a bit bland.

I ignore sodium. I don't have any medical reason to limit it, so I'll let my kidneys do their thing. Sure, sometimes I retain water a bit, but honestly as long as I remember the mantra that weight loss isn't linear, it doesn't bother me. My body will expel the excess in time.

    I make both.

I don't have a particular recipe that I rely on...just sort of wing it.

Corn tortillas are masa harina, a pinch of salt and add water until it gets to the right consistency

Flour (I usually make whole wheat) is about a 2-1 ratio of white to whole wheat flour, a bit of canola oil, a pinch of salt and then water until they get to the right consistency.

Make little balls, press them (or roll them out if you don't have a press) and cook in a dry skillet for a few seconds on each side.

Trick question: the answer for tacos is always, "bring them on."
When the question is "Taco?", my answer is always "Yes."

So Taco's are a major staple in my house. The kids love them, they're gluten free (curse you celiacs!) and super easy and quick. But holy moly they are full of sodium. I made some homemade taco seasoning, thinking it would be a better alternative, but according to the MFP recipe importer, the sodium in the homemade is through the roof!

I've always considered taco's a 'healthier' dinner because I can pile veggies on, use ground turkey, and all that jazz, but now I'm questioning if that's true. Any thoughts?

Do you have a medical condition that requires you to eat low sodium? If you are making your own seasoning reduce the salt and see how it is.

Tacos are a favorite for my family.
I go over the recommended amount of sodium all the time. I try to keep it in a certain range. It hasn't kept me from losing weight.

I love fresh corn tortillas. Unfortunately they always taste horrible the next day. Darn; they must all be consumed immediately...

Just don't add salt then. It's not like taco ingredients are particularly bland on their own anyway.

OP, what did you end up putting into your taco seasoning? I usually just blend several spices (chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne) and then let everyone salt to taste. And really, with the addition of cheese, salsa, and guacamole, there's usually plenty of salt to go around.

Try a different seasoning recipe...my seasoning recipe has no salt whatsoever. I would happily share but I don't have it at my fingertips this moment. If you are interested, I can certainly post here. I also like to use large lettuce leaves as a wrap instead of traditional shells or even a taco salad but to me, tacos can fit very nicely into a good diet.

El Paso and Ortego both sell lower sodium taco seasoning packets. I actually prefer the less salty flavor now :)

I would make your own taco seasoning you can find recipes online. Just make a big batch and store it in jar to use whenever you need them. That way you can adjust the amounts of ingredients to your taste, especially the salt. You might want to switch to pink Himalayan salt or mineral salt. A little pricey, but better for your health than regular table salt or sea salt.

From the recipe that I manually added, using Old El Paso mild taco seasoning, the Sodium is 293 mg per taco. I don't pay attention to my sodium numbers, so I don't know if that is high or not. I think they also make a lower sodium mix as well.

We often add fresh salsa to the sautéed ground beef in lieu of spices and it has great flavor!

I make tacos, but not like I once did. I don't add much salt, but rely on veggies, herbs and spices for flavoring. I use ground turkey instead of beef. Ground turkey works much better than chicken for good flavor, IMO.

I don't make tortillas much anymore. The press got pushed to the back of a cabinet. My warmer still sits out because it's cute, but I store things in it now, since it's only used when I have house guests. I kind of miss the tortillas, but I just make a taco salad instead. The white, crunchy parts of iceberg lettuce are not as yummy as tortillas, but they're crunchy. :)

Mrs. Dash makes a no-salt taco mix, if you don't want to make your own. Some of the online spice companies have taco blends - I'm not sure how high they are in salt, but you could check. :)

Sometimes I replace the taco shell with an iceberg lettuce leaf. The lettuce leaf "shell" gives all the crunch and you can still pack it with all the filling. Zero salt and practically zero calorie shell if that's what your after.

But in saying that, if a life without tacos is not a life you want to face, then make it fit in your day!! Loving the idea of seasoning the sour cream - you will get the taste and drastically reduce the salt.

I would never go on a diet that doesn't include tacos or the like. I probably go to Chipotle at least twice a week.

This family loves tacos too! One of our absolute favorites is fish tacos. Grilled seasoned tilapia with salsa on a corn tortilla... ok now my mouth is watering. Taco seasoning, even with beef or chicken doesn't have to be the packaged high sodium stuff. Just add whatever spices you like.
