Hello.

I have a torn meniscus, and I'm trying to do above the waist exercises to stay in shape, since I am not supposed to bend my right knee at all.

I would appreciate any suggestions, please.

I take it you have seen a specialist. What does the doctor say is the long term prognosis?

Hopoefully you've seen an orthopedist and have either been referred to a surgeon or a physical therapist. Torn meniscus is pretty common as you get older. Sometimes a cortisone shot and good pt will keep it under control. My orthopedist said I probably have a small meniscus tear in addition to some arthritis. In two months I've strengthened my quads, ham strings and butt enough to now be able to climb hills with my bike not in the lowest gear and even pass people. I no longer have knee pain. I had a cortisone shot and and then started pt twice a week. I practice land pt the other 5 days and do 2 days a week of aquatic rehab.

You can control just about any orthopedic condition with the right exercise and commitment.

But I wouldn't use me as a reference for your own treatment. I would start with a good orthopedist and a stellar pt.

My advice to you would be take a break from exercises and focus on diet while your knee is healing. Use the RICE method until the dr says you can move it again. I tore my meniscus earlier this year overdoing it on exercise. It sucks, I was immobile for 2-3 weeks before I was allowed to do heel slides and isotope extensions to strengthen my knee again. During that time I just rested and focused on diet. My knee healed up nicely with no ill effects. I even lost a few lbs. while resting. It will heal if you take a break and let your body do it's thing :)

It'll heal, it will just take a month or two. 15 min of walking an hour, physical therapy twice a week. I can do whatever, so long as I don't bend my knee or use it to walk too much.

You could also spend that time working on your arms. Add free weights and do some scarecrows, triceps extentions, seated press ups, arm curls or arm circles. :) Good luck

Thanks, I'll see about looking those up and using them while I'm recovering.

Its's a good idea. I've been trying to focus on my diet, but I also don't want to lose muscle tone while I'm recovering. At least above the waist if I can help it.

I've actually got my kickboxing/mma class twice a week, and I'm doing stick drills while sitting on a stool. I just need something to fill in the other 3-4 days I want to workout.
