Hi, I'm new to all this. I need to lose 40 pounds. The older I get the harder it is to lose weight. If anyone has any suggestions please help me.

If you open your diary we can give you specific advice. In general,

    1) Make sure you are setting a reasonable calorie deficit. Don't try to eat too little, thinking it will get you to goal faster.
    2) Drink lots of water, but don't drink your calories. Avoid juice, milk, coffees and teas with sugar & milk added, alcohol, regular soda etc.
    3) Eat a lot of protein, and even some fats. They help you feel fuller and last longer
    4) Also eat a lot of fruits and veggies, they fill you up for fewer calories
    5) Avoid fast food and restaurants for a while. They use up too many calories.

I'm not saying you can't lose weight if you do these things, I am saying if you are struggling with your appetite, take a good look at what you are filling up on.

I suggest you take some time and read through these incredible posts in the getting started section:

what has been said above. Don't need to be starving. See what works for you - more meals during the day perhaps? I started off eating 6 meals a day - instead of a "snack" I ate a meal with lots of salad/vegs and meat.
Not everyone likes that though and prefer to eat 3 big meals. Or whatever - the key is to eat stuff that will fill you up.

    Good luck!

Make sure that all your meals include protein and fat. What works for me is to eat less than 100g of carbs a day and more than 70g of protein. I let the fat take care of itself (I avoid vegetable oils, using only olive oil, real butter and coconut oil.)

To get started just log all your food even if you know you're not eating right. It's all about educating yourself about the calorie content of foods and how your body needs to be fed. I like to think of this as eating to nourish and fuel my body rather than "dieting." And I look at exercise as using my body so that it functions properly. Bodies do NEED to be used! 'Use it or lose it' is true. That means walking and running and lifting heavy things and bending over and squatting. I'm 63 and started down that 'old, fat and disabled path.' And I don't want to go there! So I use my body and make my muscles work and I take care of those muscles by stretching them and letting them rest when they need it. It is really helpful for me to think this way rather than 'I can't eat this or that food' or 'I have to exercise and it's boring and hard.' I'm finding now after two months at this that I want to eat healthy, nourishing, real food and exercise because it feels good!

    Best wishes on your journey!!

are you counting calories? if so, how many are you eating? for me, what helps is cutting out stuff like rice and breads. for example instead of eating baked chicken and rice i just cut out the rice and eat more meat (i hate vegetables). also if i have a huge craving for ice cream, i make sure to have a small meal, so the rest of my calories will go to a lot of ice cream (usually half a pint). :p
