Hello, I'm newish to MFP and wondered does anyone know how to accurately calculate calories out? Thanks in advance!

It can only be measured accurately, the estimation built into MFP estimates it as good as any based on the same formula. Other formulae are available.

    Total calories? Exercise calories?

Really, it's easier to focus on calories in and figure calories out based on the effect on your weight, imo.

You can get a Fitbit Charge HR. They are pretty accurate. Other then that it's just a guess based on your height, age, and activity level.

Not unless my TDEE is over 5000. I'll give it some more time, though.

My Fitbit Charge HR says my TDEE is over 5000 calories per day. My TDEE isn't over 5000 calories per day. I will give it some time to see if it eventually arrives at a more reasonable number.

My FitBit is pretty accurate with TDEE. It's only a One, though. I'm average height/weight/age, though. So that might be why I find mine is so accurate (though I did take an inch off my height to lower my BMR a little bit to make my results more accurate based on results).

It took about a month of wearing it continuously for mine to get more accurate, though I think it's only about 80% percent accurate. Imo.

Remember it's based on your age, height, weight and activity level. What are your stats? How many steps are you doing per day? How do you know it's wrong?

Yeah, I haven't had it that long, so I'll give it a chance. It'll still just be one bit of interesting data that takes a back seat to my actual results, but I'm interested to see what it says.

My UP2 was within a couple hundred calories over time, which isn't terrible, but still too much variance to be a go-to source.

If you believe it's only 80% accurate I would return it. 80% is worthless. Have you actually done a comparison of your calories burned versus your calories consumed and how much weight you have actually lost? I have over several months and have found it to be very accurate. But that would also depend on how accurate you are with your logging. Maybe tighten up your logging.

I have. For over a year. That's how I know my TDEE isn't close to 5000. That's about 25% too high.

Still, maybe the band will improve its estimates.

Glad to hear yours is accurate. Yes I have done an actual comparison, several times in fact. When I was concerned about the accuracy I was on point with my logging, weighing/measuring everything and only eating at home. 80% accuracy is fine for my purposes which I don't find the need to elaborate on. I believe some of the accuracy issue lie with the fact that I have to wear it on my dominant hand, and I knew that was going to be a factor when I purchased the unit.

Realistically, you can't. You can only estimate. The numbers provided on most sites that give a number for 'running', 'walking', etc are generic and often bear no relation to the calories you burn. Exercise equipment tends to overestimate a lot. A better way is to use a calculator that uses your heart-rate as that will have more of a correlation to your actual effort.

    I use this calculator:
    http://www.calories-calculator.net/Calories_Burned_By_Heart_Rate.html

    This is a good article:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/20/health/nutrition/20BEST.html

The section about subtracting the calories you would have used if at rest was a duh! moment for me. 60 mins on my elliptical shows around 600 cals on the machine, but only around 450 using the heart-rate calculation. Could make the difference between deficit and no-deficit....
