Pain in Knee?

I've recently noticed a lot of pain in my right knee when running. I obviously stop immediately when it starts to hurt. I've been told by a few fellow runners that it might be "Runner's Knee". It also sometimes hurts when walking down the stairs. The pain in generally in the back of my knee. It doesn't look swollen at all.
Anyone else have this problem?

This seems to be pretty common. You can find lots of advice on this but basically it all boils down to strengthening the leg muscles, hamstrings specifically, rolling your IT band, and checking your shoes to see if you need more pronation control. Ease up on the running and avoid all downhill running until it gets better.

It also could be a symptom of too much too soon. Have you increased your distance or speed much lately?0 -

I just bought new shoes last night. I had the same pair since 2013 (terrible, I know). I bought some Nike's back in March but those were quickly given away because the made my feet burn. Maybe these new shoes will help, although this morning I tried running (first morning wearing the new shoes), and my knee still hurt -- and does right now as well. I will look into the article that you had given me. Do you recommend any strengthening exercises for this?

The ongoing pain in my knee turned out to be arthritis. My orthopedist gave me a cortisone shot and sent me to physical therapy. The PT gave me exercises to strengthen my quads, hamstrings and butt plus balance exercises. After about two months the added strength let me ride a bicycle up hill at higher speeds than before plus increased balance and general leg strength reduced the difficulty in doing step exercises and waling up and down stairs.
I recommend anyone with chronic pain get it checked out and not rely on casual advice.0 -

They hit on the Romanian deadlift as being a great exercise for this type thing. In general, strengthening the leg muscles helps with overall stability.

Go it checked by an orthopedist for an accurate assessment. That slight pain, could end up being constant. Last person I had that had it, ended up having a small meniscus tear that just got worse as she ran and ended up having minor surgery to repair it.

New shoes are good. Seeing an orthopedist is a good idea too but let's say that you're stubborn like me and don't. You need to rest that knee and let it get better. Take some time off and then give the new shoes a chance. Getting new shoes won't make it magically better overnight.
Use a running application like Strava to track the mileage on your shoes. I try to replace mine after 350 - 400 miles.0
