I used the cross-trainer (stepper/elliptical hybrid) and it seemed to burn a ton of calories very quickly (based on heart rate and age on the machine itself). However, I then bought a heart rate monitor with a chest strap (New Balance N4) and found out that I was burning HALF of what the machine at the gym estimated I was burning. I'm definitely trusting my heart rate monitor and would reccommend that if you want an accurate reading of calories burned, you should invest in one. On a side note, I do feel like the cross-trainer works my quads and glutes pretty good in conjuction with the strength training that I do. Good luck!

I agree with Dnsnyder that you should invest in a Heart-rate monitor. They are worth it if you plan to keep at this awhile. I got my Polar FT4 on sale for 80 but Target here carries them for 109 all the time. Spendy but they last a long time and are one of the best rated monitors on the market.
As for the stair stepper, I do think they burn calories like mad, and work the butt and back of the thighs really well.
I would say it is definitely something you should add to your gym routine
