Is there such thing as Carb Withdrawal?

I started on this site June 1, and I feel like I am doing a pretty good jobso far. The problem is, I want carbs like never before. I was definately eating a lot more carbs than I should have been and when I started this, I started following the goals it gave me. It's like my mind is trying to tell me that I'm depriving myself when in fact I know I'm eating what I'm supposed to and my stomach feels full. Have I been eating THAT bad over the last 5-6 years? Here's an example: my husband made spaghetti a few nights ago. I think I could've ate the whole pan if I wasn't REALLY trying to stick to my goals.

Pasta and garlic bread and soda! Oh My!! Pasta and garlic bread and soda! Oh My!! Pasta and garlic bread and soda! Oh My!!

To top things off, I'm not getting enough fiber and I think that's another reason I'm not feeling totally satisfied after a meal. I think I'm going to have to get a fiber supplement.

  • Why are you not eating carbs?
  • I'm eating the amount of carbs mfp tells me to and sometime I go over a little. But I think before I started this, I was eating nearly twice the amount of carbs I am now. I'm just saying it's hard to reduce my carbs to a healthy level, when I've been so unhealthy for so long. That's all.

Yeah it is hard. I love a big bowl of carbs. lol I used to do 40% to 70% carbs and the rest protein (and fat) and veggies... What is that?, I just fill up on protein and veggies now but still eat the carbs too. Just way less.

You are too funny, but I totally can relate to your pain! This girl loves rice. :blushing:
To answer your direct question, while I am not so sure about “carb withdrawal’ you can deny yourself carbs to the point that it craves it. This is actually the most important aspect (but most forgotten) of what is called carb-loading that often runners do to prepare for a race. But enough of my rant on that.

What you may be feeling is your body adjusting to sustaining itself on the new foods you have given it. I do want to say that all carbs are equal…nor bad. You’ve got simple and complex carbs and you really just want to reduce the simple carbs. If you keep it mostly complex carbs you can afford to go over. Rather than cutting out carbs all together, it may be easier to replace the simple carbs with more complex ones. It will help you feel full and may reduce those cravings.

So brown rice instead of white rice. Whole wheat pasta/bread instead of white. That sort of stuff. Though I can taste the difference with whole wheat bread, when it comes to pasta, by the time you add the sauce it taste the same to me. Since I like white rice, I will buy both white and brown and mix them together in my container. So when I make rice I am having a little bit of both. Try sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes. You can roast them up or bake them too and they are much healthier. I have had cucumbers and squash cut up and sautéed and it is a little heavier so I don’t miss my rice as much. Did I mention I LOVE rice? The hardest thing is sustaining weight loss and some of these changes are tough so take your time and do what you know you can sustain over time.

Umm, chyeah! I'm one of those people that HAS to have some form of carbs with my meals, mainly being dinner. Breakfast and lunch, I can make due, but dinner feels almost wrong without a carb, whether it being white rice, a piece of crusty bread or mashed potatoes.

In my weightloss journey, I'm not cutting out the things I love, just portion controlling. Instead of a montrous glob of mashed potatoes, I actually take the time to look at serving size and go from there. Same with the rice, although I'm going to once again TRY to transition from white to brown. Sigh.
  • Carb loading makes sense. I played sports in high school and learned all about that. I guess my activity level went down and my carb intake stayed the same. Yikes! It hadn't really occurred to me.
And as far as carbs with meals...it is a must at dinner. I find it hard not to have a meat and potatoe dinner without a roll or bread of some sort.
I think this is really helpful info and I do need to be trying other foods with complex carbs. I guess I was reaised in a simple carb household. Thanks for the help. : )

cycle them on high and low days. Replenish your gycogen levels with a refeed once in a while.
