Apparently in 2016 a new gadget will be coming out that will be able to tell you how many calories a certain dish or food item has with a simple scan.

Seems stupid. All it does is identify the calorie density, it doesn't calculate the mass, therefore it will be just as off as me randomly guessing based on similar foods in the MFP database.
To accurately assess the number of calories, the user will have to identify the portion size of the piece of food that is being scanned.

EDIT: to clarify, the technology is cool, but the calorie counting application seems stupid.

Oh, come on. Elephants look lovely in tutus! ;)

The technology seems cool, but more a novelty than actually useful for we mere mortals this early on. Like with all technology, it'll evolve, so maybe in a few years it'll be a miracle calorie scanner. But not yet. And the Daily Mail is the equivalent to Fox for its level of credibility in unbiased news 'reporting'. I'm honestly surprised they didn't try to claim the Scio would give you cancer. :s
