Chronic Illness- Medication & Weight Loss

Options
I was wondering if anyone else was loosing weight too quickly due to medication. Do you go with it or up calories on purpose? [I have a problem with appetite, mostly.]
I'm feeling very ill, so I don't count all of my calories like I used to. I was only losing 2 pounds a month or so, but then in the past few weeks, it's getting closer to a pound a week. I'm almost at my goal weight.
I'm far away from "underweight," so I'm not excessively concerned, yet, I don't know if I should just start force-feeding or just going with it. (For reference: I am 5 ft 6 and I started at 190 pounds in Jan 2014, got to 160 pounds within 6 month last year while I was in better health, gained it all back within 3 months after a surgery, but within the last year I've gotten to almost 150 and I would like to be 140 again).
Thanks for any input!
Sarah

I'd talk to your doctor about a referral to a registered dietician. Also, if they think you should be loosing weight while you are ill.

Its a difficult one, a friend of mine has just had surgery on an hiatus hernia so was on a liquid diet for the good part of 12weeks and saw a dietician regularly, they knew she was going to lose weight but felt she was losing too fast (26lbs in about 8wks i think) so they put her on those high calorie drinks to slow it down. She had plenty to lose herself she was obese at the time of the surgery. The dietician was still concerned when she went slowly back to solids and losing weight quite rapidly, the dietician told her if weight loss is not on purpose its a concern. So it might be worth mentioning it to your doctor and see what they say.

This is a question for the doctor, for sure. Medicine can influence weight gain and loss, but so can illness. He's the one who will need to sort that out.

I hope you get your answers soon and that they're all positive ones.

She's not kidding about the "for once." She never agrees with me, like ever.

If she and I are saying the same thing, it really cannot get more solidly said. Listen to us.

    Call the doctor. :)

Mostly, I was looking to talk to other patients who have experienced this. I have talked to doctors, but life is very different when you average 250 visits a year. Obviously, I have discussed this with my doctors, since I'm with a specialist every week, even ones with dietitians in staff, but I was looking to connect with other people like me.

I should clarify that the medication causes me to forget to eat. And I'm regularly tested for everything under the sun. I just spent a week in hell at the Mayo Clinic (I am surprised that I have blood left). My tests come back normal. I have neurological and connective tissue problems.

    Hi Sarah,
If your forgetting to eat because of medications i suggest eating by the clock.Or you can carry on as you are but at some point your gonna wanna stop loosing and then its really gonna feel like your force feeding yourself. I have the opposite problem with medications causing hunger. I also deal with chronic pain from a connective tissue disease. I wish you better health. Take care!

While many of us have issues with various things- I have messed up hips- we don't know what your specific issues are and what is going to affect them. Now if someone with hip issues asked what they could do to get more active, I could answer it, but I'd also suggest they talk to their physical therapist.
