I know it's doable, if I can drop 2 lbs a week for 25 weeks. My biggest challenge is that I'm a mom of twin 2 1/2 year olds and I rarely choose myself over them or the needs of my house. But I'm carrying around almost all my pregnancy weight and I turn 40 in 4 months. So it's time. I'm afraid, but feel like it's urgent. I went for a physical last week and waiting on results. Fully expect a poor report, yet I want to get started before they come in.

I'd focus on doing your best each week. It depends how heavy you are when you start and how you plan to accomplish that type of change. I wouldn't be able to comfortably do 50 in 6 months myself, but closer to 30.

If people can lose 100lbs in year or less in some cases, you can TOTALLY do 50lbs in 6 months! Just make sure, if you aren't sure how to do so healthily or safely to consult your doctor before starting and maybe make a plan to have some more checkups throughout to keep you in tip top shape! It's never NOT worth a $25 copay to protect yourself from being incapacitated do to health issues or injury. Think of all the weight you won't lose if you become incapacitated, when consulting with your doctor could keep that from happening altogether!

Depends on what you are doing. You may be starving and your body is holding onto fat. Or, if you are doing cardio and resistance training or weights you could be building muscle which is common for people who are just beginning. Lastly, it depends on the quality of the food you eat. The cleaner you eat, the faster your body changes. Staying in the green may not be helping if it is all unclean food. In any case make your diary public so we can see what it is your eating and wha your "struggling" is.

Definitely doable. I would suggest losing weight lower so you don't starve yourself and your skin will maintain elasticity. Totally up to you though. The best way to change your body composition is to choose your type of resistance training like weights or bodyweight exercises, eat as clean as you can stand, and get to moving with that cardio. You may even gain weight the first few weeks. That will be the muscle coming in and the fat leaving.

Hi. I'm a mom of toddlers too. Motivation is good, but I found for me personally that setting a 2lb a week loss with kids and a job is super hectic. Basically, I was setting myself up to fail. The best thing to do is to just start. Don't start with a preconceived notion of time or weekly poundage. If you have a rough week or don't make it, it will totally stress you out.

Maybe start a mini goal to lose 10lbs over the first month and then evaluate how it felt. Were you stressed, hungry? Could you be happy losing a pound a week instead? 40 isn't a magic number. If you lose 25lbs by 40 you will still feel amazing. Weight loss doesn't stop after 40.

I agree with everything enterdanger said. I am also a mom of a toddler and work full time so it does get stressful trying to keep it all together and adding in exercise time etc. I had all these "hard goals" I wanted to hit before my birthday last month. I think trying to say I NEED TO LOSE XX LBS by a specific date is not realistic unless you can be perfect. Even with my best weeks sometimes I lose 2-3 lbs sometimes I can only lose 1. Then there are bad weeks I haven't lost anything but I keep moving forward and get better. Just figure out what works and keep doing it. You will lose the weight. Just be proud of what you accomplish weather its 50lbs in 6 months or not. Good luck!!!

I've managed to lose 6 lbs in 7 weeks...staying within calorie goals and exercising daily made this possible without feeling like I was starving myself, and without losing hair or skin health etc......but just that six lbs has been hard work! I personally don't think trying to lose anything more than a pound or so a week is healthy, unless your starting weight is very high to begin with. I'd be worried about my mood and performance during the time, especially with two small people depending on me. But that's me! Good luck to you if you decide to do this! xo

Thanks all. Great support. I agree that pushing too hard could demotivate me. I'm going to try with calorie counting and daily walks. Let's see how I do!

After a while too it will be harder to lose 2 pounds each month, because you'll be weighing less. If you think it's doable for you now, then go for it, but don't expect to be able to do it through-out your journey (unless 50 is a part-goal?). So you won't get disappointed when you "stagnate" (because so long as you have a deficit, you won't completely, but it might be slower going).

I would suggest trying it for a month (if possible) and see how it goes; did you end up losing 2 pounds per week (overall, or even actually checking week-by-week to see if and when your weight loss slows down)? Was it difficult? What was the hardest part? What can you do better? That way you're able to change your goals and aspirations for each month, which might help with the weight loss.

    Good luck!

Slow and steady wins the race :)
Forget about setting number targets - just eat at a calorie deficit and record your results weekly.

When I first started, I was setting myself all sorts of 'weight targets'. I'd tell myself "By the end of this week I will be X weight" and it just made me miserable and took the excitement out of it. Go easy on yourself and good luck.
