What being Strong means to you

What is your definition of being strong?

Is it being able lift the most heavy things on the job with short bursts of raw power?
Is it having the endurance to being able to swing that sledge hammer over and over again without taking a break?
Is it a fine balance between the two or something completely different to you?

Its all a matter of opinion really but for me personally I would say a balance of both strength and endurance.

Strength, to me isn't a physical thing, cause there will always be someone stronger, faster, and better than me. Strength is being able to lay your head down at the end of an honest hard day, and go to sleep knowing you left the world that much better than it was before....strength is finding and using YOUR God given talents to make your life, and especially those around you, lives better. That to me is TRUE strength.

I will defer to something one of my coaches said: "The strongest people in the world are those who can make their whole body function as one unit." When people lift weights, they build big muscles with linear strength, but have not done the training necessary to use their muscles together for optimal performance. For example, a 250 pound muscle man can certainly lift a much heavier sand bag than I can using his arms and legs. However, I could quite possibly lift the same bag, if I had the proper technique to use the optimal combination of my arms, calves, quadriceps, hips, upper and lower back, and deltoids. If he could do the same thing, he would be stronger than I was, because his lifting capability would then be greater, but he is limited by his knowledge of how to use his strength.

This, of course, is my opinion on strength, and I mean no disrespect to anyone who has a different take on strength.

I am not going to get all philosophical about strength, I am just going to answer the question. We are talking about fitness, not mental well being. For me being strong is a combination of physical strength, power, speed and endurance. I started my weight loss journey in May 2009 at 5'10" 231 lbs. I could bench on a bowflex about 135lbs and run a mile in 10 minutes, I could run a 5k in 33 minutes. It is now June 8, 2011. I am now 5'10" and 181 lbs. I can bench 350lbs on a powertech leverage bench and a bowflex, run a 7 minute mile, and run a 5k in 24 min 10 sec. I am in the best overall shape of my life at age 42 . I am training for a marathon and hope to lose another 10 lbs this summer.

For me it would mean being able to do chin-ups - more than any other woman I know personally. But right now I can't do one... yet....

In terms of fitness, my definition of strength would have to be pushing myself to do something that I wouldn't normally do, especially when "I'm tired, I'm sore, I'm sweaty" starts running through my head and I do it anyways.

Being strong... I was curious what it meant to different people and everyone has great suggestions! Each has its importance in its own way.

    Strength (Raw Power)
    Endurance (repetitions, marathon)
    Balance(Strength/Endurance)
    Willpower (pushing through it)
    Attitude
Overall Package (strength, power, endurance, agility etc)

    Thanks for the insight!
